The fastest way
Call Vivint's cancellation line at +1 800-678-2635, or +1 800-216-5232 ext. 5020. Ask for a Notice of Cancellation, then sign it and return it at least 30 days before the date you want to cancel. Vivint doesn't publish how long confirmation takes.

- Phone (fastest): Call +1 800-678-2635 and say “cancel my service”. Expect a retention pitch, decline it twice and hold firm.
- Post: After the call, Vivint sends a Notice of Cancellation to sign and return (by email, fax or certified mail). Include the date, service number, intent to cancel, reason and signature.. Send it tracked so you can prove delivery.
- Email: Vivint doesn’t process cancellations by email. Still worth sending one: it dates your cancellation request in writing, which matters for disputes and refunds.
Timing matters: Give at least 30 days' notice before your cancellation date. In-home sales: 3-day right to cancel (60 days if you're 65+). Online purchases: 30-day money-back guarantee. Billing continues until the signed Notice of Cancellation is processed.
The email that backs it up
Vivint won’t action a cancellation from an email alone, use the fastest channel above for the cancellation itself. This email still earns its place: it puts your cancellation date in writing (your evidence if they keep billing) and it’s where the refund request happens.

Cancellation Request, [your account email]Send this template
Hi Vivint team, I'm writing to cancel the subscription on my account, [your account email]. Please treat this as formal notice of cancellation, effective from the end of the current billing period. Under the FTC's Click-to-Cancel rule, cancellation must be available through a channel as simple as the one I signed up through. Please confirm by reply that the subscription has been cancelled and that no further charges will be taken. If your policy allows it, I'd also appreciate a pro-rata refund for the unused portion of the current period. Best, [your name]

Vivint plans you can cancel
- 24/7 Professional Monitoring (entry tier)$24.99/mo
Month-to-month only if you paid for the equipment upfront or bought online. Financed systems usually come with a multi-year service agreement, and you cancel by phone plus a signed Notice of Cancellation.
- 24/7 Professional Monitoring (Smart Hub / full camera tier)$44.99/mo
Same cancellation route: call 1-800-678-2635 and return a signed Notice of Cancellation with 30 days' notice. Early termination fees depend on your agreement.
- HomeProtect equipment package$29.99/mo
The equipment is regularly priced at $349.99, plus $199 installation (often waived) and $29.99/mo monitoring. If you financed the equipment through a third-party partner, that balance stays with the lender after you cancel.
What happens to what you’ve already paid
Equipment and systems: new systems bought online come with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Systems sold in your home usually come with only the legal 3-day right to cancel, or 60 days if you're 65 or older. Defective products are covered for up to 4 months after installation and can be repaired, replaced or refunded. Monitoring service: cancelling may trigger early termination or other fees set by your service agreement, which you can find under Documents in your Account Center. Third-party reports put this at the remaining contract balance, plus up to $300 in year one. Equipment financing: any balance with Vivint's lending partner (e.g. Citizens) stays owed even after the monitoring is cancelled. If you were charged after a confirmed cancellation, ask for a refund of those monthly monitoring charges.
“*The 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee is a promotional offer and applies to new systems purchased online.”

Does Vivint charge a cancellation fee?
Vivint’s terms mention conditions worth checking before you cancel, see the plan notes and policy quote above for the specifics we found. In general: rolling monthly plans end at the period you’ve already paid for with nothing extra to pay, while minimum-term or contract plans can carry an early-exit charge until the term ends.
What doesn’t work for cancelling Vivint
Based on 7 sources, Reddit, app reviews, and direct testing. Skip these and save yourself the loop.
- ✕ Just stopping payment or cancelling the card, Not paying the monitoring bill doesn't cancel the agreement. You need to call and return a signed Notice of Cancellation, and the balance keeps growing until you do.
- ✕ Cancelling in the Vivint app or on the website, There's no self-serve cancel flow. Vivint's own policy page sends you to the phone line at 1-800-678-2635.
- ✕ Trusting a rep who says 'you're cancelled' on the phone, Several Trustpilot reviewers were told on a call that their account was cancelled, then kept getting billed for months. One found out five months later.
- ✕ Cancelling by live chat or a plain email without a signed Notice of Cancellation, Guides say Vivint doesn't treat chat or email as the cancellation route. Its process needs a phone call followed by a signed Notice of Cancellation with 30 days' notice.
- ✕ Expecting cancellation to clear your financed equipment, Vivint's policy says customers with financing still owe any outstanding balance under their third-party financing agreement.
Cancelled Vivint but still being charged?
Three common reasons, in order of likelihood:
- The cancellation didn’t actually complete. If you never received a written confirmation from Vivint, treat it as not cancelled. Email
documents@vivint.comreferencing your original request date and ask for written confirmation plus a refund of any charge taken since. - You cancelled in the wrong place. Subscriptions started through the App Store or Google Play bill through Apple or Google, cancelling on Vivint’s site doesn’t touch them. Check Settings → Subscriptions on iPhone, or Play Store → Payments & subscriptions on Android.
- Billing lag. A charge that was already in flight when you cancelled can still land a few days later. One trailing charge can be normal; two is not.
If they keep charging after a confirmed cancellation, that’s chargeback territory: dispute the charge with your bank citing “subscription cancelled, merchant continued billing”. The yoink app also flags this automatically, it keeps watching your inbox after a confirmed cancellation and alerts you if Vivint charges again.
How Vivint will try to keep you
Vivint may respond with a retention offer, a discount, a free month, or a downgrade to a cheaper tier. Don't engage with the counteroffer. Restate that you want a full cancellation and cite the consumer law again if they push back.
They’ll say: “A rep confirms the cancellation verbally but never sends paperwork, and billing carries on”
You say: Before you hang up, ask for the Notice of Cancellation to be emailed to you, plus a confirmation or reference number. Return the signed notice the same day and keep proof you sent it.
They’ll say: “You get passed between departments (customers report up to five transfers)”
You say: Open with: 'I'm calling to cancel. Please transfer me to the cancellations / Customer Loyalty team.' The general line routes cancellations through ext. 5020.
They’ll say: “The early termination fee only comes up on a later call, or a fee waiver is promised and then dropped”
You say: Ask for the exact payoff figure and any fee waiver by email before you agree to anything. Quote the rep's name, the date and the waiver in your Notice of Cancellation.
They’ll say: “You're told the cancellation was 'unsuccessful', or that you never replied to their email”
You say: Send the signed Notice of Cancellation again with your earlier proof of sending attached. Ask for written confirmation of the effective cancellation date.
They’ll say: “If you're moving, they push you to transfer the system instead of cancelling”
You say: Say clearly that you don't want to transfer service. If death, bankruptcy, a move to assisted living or military duty applies, ask for the Exceptions Review Team.
They’ll say: “They offer a payment plan for the remaining balance instead of releasing you”
You say: Ask whether returning the equipment or an extenuating-circumstance exception removes the fee. Turn down the plan until you have the full payoff in writing.
They’ll say: “Nothing moves until you mention outside complaints”
You say: One reviewer said Vivint only started helping after mentioning an attorney, the BBB and the FTC. Say you'll file a BBB complaint if this isn't resolved in writing within 10 days.
Your rights when cancelling
The law where you live is the strongest hook, lead with it when you contact the company.
United States
- FTC Click-to-Cancel Rule (2024+)Cancel must be as easy as sign-up.
The Federal Trade Commission’s Click-to-Cancel rule requires Vivint to make cancelling at least as simple as signing up, same channel, same number of clicks. If they buried the cancel button or forced a phone call, they’re in violation; report to reportfraud.ftc.gov.
- California ARL (auto-renewal law)Renewal must be cancellable online.
California Business & Professions Code §17602 forces any company billing California residents on auto-renewal to provide an online cancel mechanism. Lawsuits have been won on this; companies often refund quickly when it’s cited.
Worldwide
- Card-issuer chargebackYour bank can reverse the charge.
Visa, Mastercard, and Amex all run chargeback schemes, “goods/services not as described” or “subscription not cancelled” are valid reason codes everywhere they operate. Your bank handles the dispute; Vivint has ~45 days to defend.
Delete your Vivint account (not just cancel)
Cancelling stops the billing; deleting removes your account and personal data. Do them in that order, deleting an account with an active subscription can leave the billing running with no way to log in and stop it.
If there’s no delete option in Vivint’s account settings, email documents@vivint.com with the subject Account deletion request, [your account email] and ask for your account and personal data to be erased under state privacy laws such as the CCPA. They’re typically required to act on it, most companies complete erasure within about 30 days, and you should ask for written confirmation when it’s done.
Common questions about cancelling Vivint
Yes, but it often costs money. Vivint's policy says cancellations **may be subject to early termination or other fees** set out in your service agreement, which you can find under Documents in your Account Center. There are exceptions, decided case by case by the Exceptions Review Team, for death, bankruptcy, moving to assisted living or care (with a 65+ exception) and active military duty. Systems paid for upfront or bought online usually run month-to-month, which makes leaving much cheaper. Either way, call **1-800-678-2635** and return a signed Notice of Cancellation.
Money-back questions (windows, pro-rata, chargebacks) are covered in the Vivint refund guide. Need a human for something else entirely? The Vivint contact guide lists every channel that actually answers.
