Cancellation Request, [your account email]Send this template
Hi iCloud team, I'm writing to cancel the subscription on my account, [your account email]. Please treat this as formal notice of cancellation, effective from the end of the current billing period. Under the FTC's Click-to-Cancel rule, cancellation must be available through a channel as simple as the one I signed up through. Please confirm by reply that the subscription has been cancelled and that no further charges will be taken. If your policy allows it, I'd also appreciate a pro-rata refund for the unused portion of the current period. Best, [your name]
Wait for confirmation
Wait 24 hours. If there's no response, send a polite one-line follow-up referencing the original request.

iCloud’s refund policy
Apple offers partial refunds for iCloud+ where required by law and asks you to request a refund within 14 days of a plan change via reportaproblem.apple.com. Refund decisions usually arrive within 24 to 48 hours. If you switch to an Apple One plan that includes equal or larger iCloud storage, Apple automatically issues a pro-rated refund and cancels your standalone iCloud+ plan. Otherwise, cancellation simply stops the next charge, your plan remains active until the billing period ends.
“Partial refunds are available where required by law. If you recently changed your iCloud+ plan, contact Apple within 14 days for a refund.”

Does iCloud charge a cancellation fee?
We found no cancellation fee in iCloud’s published terms. On a rolling plan you simply pay to the end of the current billing period and nothing after. If you’re inside a fixed minimum term, check your signup email for the end date, cancelling early is where fees usually hide.
What doesn’t work for cancelling iCloud
Based on 3 sources, Reddit, app reviews, and direct testing. Skip these and save yourself the loop.
- ✕ Deleting the iCloud app or signing out of your Apple Account, Signing out doesn't cancel the subscription, billing continues until you tap Cancel Subscription. Apple explicitly notes you must keep a payment method on file while an iCloud+ subscription is active.
- ✕ Removing your payment method before cancelling, Apple requires at least one valid payment method on file for active iCloud+ subscriptions; removing the card doesn't end the contract, it just creates an unpaid balance.
- ✕ Emailing abuse@icloud.com or Apple Support to cancel, abuse@icloud.com handles mail/phishing abuse, not billing. Apple routes all subscription cancellations through Settings or reportaproblem.apple.com, email requests are not processed.
- ✕ Letting storage stay over-quota and hoping the plan auto-cancels, Apple keeps charging the current tier; Mail and new syncs stop working but the subscription itself doesn't cancel automatically.
Cancelled iCloud but still being charged?
Three common reasons, in order of likelihood:
- The cancellation didn’t actually complete. If you never received a written confirmation from iCloud, treat it as not cancelled. Email
abuse@icloud.comreferencing your original request date and ask for written confirmation plus a refund of any charge taken since. - You cancelled in the wrong place. Subscriptions started through the App Store or Google Play bill through Apple or Google, cancelling on iCloud’s site doesn’t touch them. Check Settings → Subscriptions on iPhone, or Play Store → Payments & subscriptions on Android.
- Billing lag. A charge that was already in flight when you cancelled can still land a few days later. One trailing charge can be normal; two is not.
If they keep charging after a confirmed cancellation, that’s chargeback territory: dispute the charge with your bank citing “subscription cancelled, merchant continued billing”. The yoink app also flags this automatically, it keeps watching your inbox after a confirmed cancellation and alerts you if iCloud charges again.
How iCloud will try to keep you
iCloud may respond with a retention offer, a discount, a free month, or a downgrade to a cheaper tier. Don't engage with the counteroffer. Restate that you want a full cancellation and cite the consumer law again if they push back.
They’ll say: “On-screen warning that you 'may not have enough iCloud storage to sync all your data' when you tap Cancel Subscription.”
You say: This is a warning, not a blocker. Before cancelling, download Photos and iCloud Drive contents locally (or move them to another cloud), then proceed, the 5GB free tier remains available for essentials.
They’ll say: “Offer to downgrade to a smaller paid tier (e.g. 50GB) instead of fully cancelling, framed as 'See All Plans'.”
You say: If you genuinely don't need iCloud+, choose the Free (5GB) plan in Downgrade Options, that's the true cancel path. Don't accept the 50GB nudge unless you actually use the privacy features.
They’ll say: “Bundling pressure: prompts to switch to Apple One (which keeps iCloud storage but adds Music/TV+).”
You say: Apple One is only cheaper if you already pay for two or more of those services. If you only want to stop paying for storage, cancel iCloud+ outright, do not 'upgrade' to a bundle.
They’ll say: “Refund-window confusion: Apple says 'contact within 14 days' but the in-app Cancel button doesn't offer a refund.”
You say: Use reportaproblem.apple.com (not the Settings cancel flow) to actually request a refund. Cite UK Consumer Rights / EU 14-day right of withdrawal if Apple's first response declines.
Your rights when cancelling
The law where you live is the strongest hook, lead with it when you contact the company.
United States
- FTC Click-to-Cancel Rule (2024+)Cancel must be as easy as sign-up.
The Federal Trade Commission’s Click-to-Cancel rule requires iCloud to make cancelling at least as simple as signing up, same channel, same number of clicks. If they buried the cancel button or forced a phone call, they’re in violation; report to reportfraud.ftc.gov.
- California ARL (auto-renewal law)Renewal must be cancellable online.
California Business & Professions Code §17602 forces any company billing California residents on auto-renewal to provide an online cancel mechanism. Lawsuits have been won on this; companies often refund quickly when it’s cited.
Worldwide
- Card-issuer chargebackYour bank can reverse the charge.
Visa, Mastercard, and Amex all run chargeback schemes, “goods/services not as described” or “subscription not cancelled” are valid reason codes everywhere they operate. Your bank handles the dispute; iCloud has ~45 days to defend.
Rights in other regions (United Kingdom, European Union)
United Kingdom
- Consumer Contracts Regulations 201314-day cooling-off on new subscriptions.
You can terminate any continuous service contract within 14 days of starting it and recover any payment, no questions asked. Applies regardless of iCloud’s own policy.
- Consumer Rights Act 2015Services must be as described.
If iCloud’s service was misrepresented or didn’t deliver what was promised, you have a statutory right to remedy (repair, refund, or price reduction) regardless of their terms.
European Union
- Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU14-day right of withdrawal across all EU states.
EU-wide statutory right to withdraw from any distance-sold contract within 14 days. Mirrored into local law in every member state. iCloud must honour it regardless of where they’re headquartered.
Delete your iCloud account (not just cancel)
Cancelling stops the billing; deleting removes your account and personal data. Do them in that order, deleting an account with an active subscription can leave the billing running with no way to log in and stop it.
If there’s no delete option in iCloud’s account settings, email abuse@icloud.com with the subject Account deletion request, [your account email] and ask for your account and personal data to be erased under state privacy laws such as the CCPA. They’re typically required to act on it, most companies complete erasure within about 30 days, and you should ask for written confirmation when it’s done.
Common questions about cancelling iCloud
