The fastest way
Cancel at account.proton.me → Settings → All settings → Subscription → Cancel subscription → Continue. Your plan stays active until the period ends. To get a refund, cancel and also contact support (form or mail@support.proton.me, subject "Refund request, 30-day guarantee, [username]") within 30 days of purchase. Refunds take up to 30 days. App Store/Google Play subscribers cancel there.
Or let yoink do it for you.

- Online (fastest): Direct cancel flow: account.proton.me
- Email: Email
mail@support.proton.mewith the template below, the route that creates a paper trail and carries the refund ask.
Timing matters: For a cash refund, both the cancellation and the refund request must happen within 30 days of first purchase. Cancelling stops renewal and the plan runs to the end of the period. Proton VPN Essentials, Business and Enterprise plans need notice at least 30 days before renewal, or they renew for another full term. Unpaid invoices block plan changes.

Cancellation Request, [your account email]Send this template
Hi Proton team, I'm writing to cancel the subscription on my account, [your account email]. Please treat this as formal notice of cancellation, effective from the end of the current billing period. Under the FTC's Click-to-Cancel rule, cancellation must be available through a channel as simple as the one I signed up through. Please confirm by reply that the subscription has been cancelled and that no further charges will be taken. If your policy allows it, I'd also appreciate a pro-rata refund for the unused portion of the current period. Best, [your name]
Wait for confirmation
Wait 24 hours. If there's no response, send a polite one-line follow-up referencing the original request.
Proton plans you can cancel
- Mail Plus$4.99/mo
Cancel from Settings → All settings → Subscription. Paid features last until the billing period ends, then the account moves to Proton Free (1 GB). If your mail storage is over 1 GB, you can't send or receive new email until you free up space.
- Proton Unlimited$12.99/mo
Bundle covering Mail, VPN, Pass, Drive and Calendar. Cancelling drops every service to its free tier at the end of the period. Drive files over the free limit may become restricted.
- Proton VPN Plus$9.99/mo
Cancel at account.protonvpn.com or account.proton.me → Subscription → Cancel subscription. The cancellation applies at the end of the current cycle. App Store, Google Play and Amazon Appstore purchases have to be cancelled in that store.
- Proton Duo$19.99/mo
Two-user plan. Cancelling moves both users to free limits at the end of the period.
What happens to what you’ve already paid
This policy covers Proton subscription charges (Mail Plus, VPN Plus, Pass, Drive, Unlimited, Duo and similar) bought directly on proton.me or in Proton's own apps. To get a full refund you must cancel and send a separate refund request to support within 30 days of first purchase. You can do this only once per account, and cash or bank-transfer payments aren't eligible. After 30 days, refunds are at Proton's discretion: downgrading to a cheaper paid plan turns unused time into prorated account credit, not cash. Subscriptions bought through the Apple App Store or Google Play follow those stores' refund rules. Proton Wallet (Bitcoin) and Lumo have their own separate terms.
“You may cancel your subscription within 30 days of the initial purchase and receive a full refund for the Service. For the sake of clarity, the cancellation and the request for refund must both be addressed within the 30-day period.”

Does Proton charge a cancellation fee?
We found no cancellation fee in Proton’s published terms. On a rolling plan you simply pay to the end of the current billing period and nothing after. If you’re inside a fixed minimum term, check your signup email for the end date, cancelling early is where fees usually hide.
What doesn’t work for cancelling Proton
Based on 6 sources, Reddit, app reviews, and direct testing. Skip these and save yourself the loop.
- ✕ Calling a 'Proton support' phone number found online, Proton says it has no phone support for individual plans and that numbers advertised online are scams designed to steal account logins. Only Business organisations can book calls, from inside their account.
- ✕ Cancelling and assuming the refund happens automatically, Cancelling only stops the renewal. Proton's terms require a separate refund request through support, and both steps must happen within the 30-day window.
- ✕ Asking Proton to refund an App Store or Google Play purchase, The 30-day guarantee only covers purchases made through Proton's own website and apps. Store purchases must be refunded through Apple or Google.
- ✕ Expecting cash back after day 30, After 30 days the terms say services are non-refundable and anything given is at Proton's discretion. Users often get prorated account credit instead of money.
- ✕ Claiming a second money-back refund, The terms say refunds can only be requested once per user.
- ✕ Requesting a refund on a cash or bank-transfer payment, Several reviewers say only card, PayPal and Bitcoin payments can be refunded.
- ✕ Sending an urgent refund request only to contact@proton.me, Proton says direct emails aren't connected to its support platform and are sorted by hand, so replies take longer. The support form or mail@support.proton.me is faster.
Cancelled Proton but still being charged?
Three common reasons, in order of likelihood:
- The cancellation didn’t actually complete. If you never received a written confirmation from Proton, treat it as not cancelled. Email
mail@support.proton.mereferencing your original request date and ask for written confirmation plus a refund of any charge taken since. - You cancelled in the wrong place. Subscriptions started through the App Store or Google Play bill through Apple or Google, cancelling on Proton’s site doesn’t touch them. Check Settings → Subscriptions on iPhone, or Play Store → Payments & subscriptions on Android.
- Billing lag. A charge that was already in flight when you cancelled can still land a few days later. One trailing charge can be normal; two is not.
If they keep charging after a confirmed cancellation, that’s chargeback territory: dispute the charge with your bank citing “subscription cancelled, merchant continued billing”. The yoink app also flags this automatically, it keeps watching your inbox after a confirmed cancellation and alerts you if Proton charges again.
How Proton will try to keep you
Proton may respond with a retention offer, a discount, a free month, or a downgrade to a cheaper tier. Don't engage with the counteroffer. Restate that you want a full cancellation and cite the consumer law again if they push back.
They’ll say: “Offering prorated account credit instead of a cash refund (especially after downgrading or past day 30)”
You say: I'm within 30 days of my first purchase, and your Terms of Service say I can cancel and 'receive a full refund for the Service.' I've already cancelled. Please refund the full amount to my original payment method, not as account credit.
They’ll say: “Steering you to switch plans or billing cycle instead of cancelling (switching turns unused time into credit)”
You say: I don't want to change plans or billing cycle. Please confirm the subscription is cancelled with no renewal, and process my refund under the 30-day guarantee.
They’ll say: “Slow support replies (users report 36 to 72+ hours) that run past the 30-day window”
You say: I sent this refund request on [date], which is inside the 30-day window. The date of my request decides eligibility, not the date you reply. Please process the refund.
They’ll say: “Business VPN plans renew automatically unless notice is given 30 days before renewal”
You say: This is formal notice to end my Proton VPN [Essentials/Business] subscription at the end of the current term. Please confirm in writing the date it ends and that it won't renew.
Your rights when cancelling
The law where you live is the strongest hook, lead with it when you contact the company.
United States
- FTC Click-to-Cancel Rule (2024+)Cancel must be as easy as sign-up.
The Federal Trade Commission’s Click-to-Cancel rule requires Proton to make cancelling at least as simple as signing up, same channel, same number of clicks. If they buried the cancel button or forced a phone call, they’re in violation; report to reportfraud.ftc.gov.
- California ARL (auto-renewal law)Renewal must be cancellable online.
California Business & Professions Code §17602 forces any company billing California residents on auto-renewal to provide an online cancel mechanism. Lawsuits have been won on this; companies often refund quickly when it’s cited.
Worldwide
- Card-issuer chargebackYour bank can reverse the charge.
Visa, Mastercard, and Amex all run chargeback schemes, “goods/services not as described” or “subscription not cancelled” are valid reason codes everywhere they operate. Your bank handles the dispute; Proton has ~45 days to defend.
Rights in other regions (United Kingdom, European Union)
United Kingdom
- Consumer Contracts Regulations 201314-day cooling-off on new subscriptions.
You can terminate any continuous service contract within 14 days of starting it and recover any payment, no questions asked. Applies regardless of Proton’s own policy.
- Consumer Rights Act 2015Services must be as described.
If Proton’s service was misrepresented or didn’t deliver what was promised, you have a statutory right to remedy (repair, refund, or price reduction) regardless of their terms.
European Union
- Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU14-day right of withdrawal across all EU states.
EU-wide statutory right to withdraw from any distance-sold contract within 14 days. Mirrored into local law in every member state. Proton must honour it regardless of where they’re headquartered.
Delete your Proton account (not just cancel)
Cancelling stops the billing; deleting removes your account and personal data. Do them in that order, deleting an account with an active subscription can leave the billing running with no way to log in and stop it.
If there’s no delete option in Proton’s account settings, email mail@support.proton.me with the subject Account deletion request, [your account email] and ask for your account and personal data to be erased under state privacy laws such as the CCPA. They’re typically required to act on it, most companies complete erasure within about 30 days, and you should ask for written confirmation when it’s done.
Common questions about cancelling Proton
Sign in at **account.proton.me** and open any Proton app. Go to **Settings → All settings → Subscription**, scroll to **Cancel subscription**, click **Continue**, then confirm. Your paid plan stays active until the end of the billing period and then moves to Proton Free. It won't renew. If you can't get into your dashboard, Proton's terms let you cancel by contacting Customer Support (support form or mail@support.proton.me). If you subscribed through Apple or Google, cancel in that store's subscription settings instead.
Money-back questions (windows, pro-rata, chargebacks) are covered in the Proton refund guide. Need a human for something else entirely? The Proton contact guide lists every channel that actually answers.
