What happens to what you’ve already paid
Workaway only sells one thing: a one-off annual membership for Workawayers ($69, $99 a year). Hosting is free. The terms say the membership fee is never refunded once paid, and deleting your account doesn't get you a full or partial refund either. The one published exception is the Host Response Guarantee. If you sent personalised messages to at least 10 hosts in your first 30 days and none replied, contact support within 60 days of joining and they refund you to your original payment method. It only applies to verified members who subscribed after 1 March 2024. Memberships never auto-renew, so you can't be charged for an unexpected renewal.
“However we cannot guarantee or refund under any circumstances once fee payment has been collected”

Does workaway.info charge a cancellation fee?
workaway.info’s terms mention conditions worth checking before you cancel, see the plan notes and policy quote above for the specifics we found. In general: rolling monthly plans end at the period you’ve already paid for with nothing extra to pay, while minimum-term or contract plans can carry an early-exit charge until the term ends.
What doesn’t work for cancelling workaway.info
Based on 5 sources, Reddit, app reviews, and direct testing. Skip these and save yourself the loop.
- ✕ Deleting your account to get a refund for the months you haven't used, The privacy policy says removing a Workawayer account doesn't give any refund, even a partial one, because the service has 'already been rendered'. It also says a deleted account can't be recovered.
- ✕ Asking for a refund after a host has replied, even with a rejection, The Host Response Guarantee rules exclude anyone who got any response from a host, positive or negative.
- ✕ Claiming the guarantee after sending copy-pasted, generic or AI-written messages to hosts, Workaway treats generic, copy-pasted or AI-generated messages as spam. They don't count toward the 10-host minimum and can get your account restricted.
- ✕ Expecting a refund after Workaway closes your account, The terms let Workaway remove any account without warning. App Store reviewers say their paid accounts were deleted after host disputes, with no refund and no reply from support.
- ✕ Waiting for a reply to a single email, Tripadvisor posters and App Store reviewers say Workaway ignored repeated emails about account problems. Send through the in-account contact form or live chat too, and keep a record.
- ✕ Cancelling a 'subscription' to stop a renewal charge, There's nothing to cancel. Workaway says it never charges automatically, so renewal only happens if you pay again.
Cancelled workaway.info but still being charged?
Three common reasons, in order of likelihood:
- The cancellation didn’t actually complete. If you never received a written confirmation from workaway.info, treat it as not cancelled. Email
support@workaway.inforeferencing your original request date and ask for written confirmation plus a refund of any charge taken since. - You cancelled in the wrong place. Subscriptions started through the App Store or Google Play bill through Apple or Google, cancelling on workaway.info’s site doesn’t touch them. Check Settings → Subscriptions on iPhone, or Play Store → Payments & subscriptions on Android.
- Billing lag. A charge that was already in flight when you cancelled can still land a few days later. One trailing charge can be normal; two is not.
If they keep charging after a confirmed cancellation, that’s chargeback territory: dispute the charge with your bank citing “subscription cancelled, merchant continued billing”. The yoink app also flags this automatically, it keeps watching your inbox after a confirmed cancellation and alerts you if workaway.info charges again.
How workaway.info will try to keep you
workaway.info may respond with a retention offer, a discount, a free month, or a downgrade to a cheaper tier. Don't engage with the counteroffer. Restate that you want a full cancellation and cite the consumer law again if they push back.
They’ll say: “Pushing you to pause instead of delete, and warning that deletion is permanent ('please DO NOT remove your account if you only wish to pause it')”
You say: If you just need a break, pausing is free and keeps your profile and reviews. If you're sure you're done, deleting is your right. Just know it can't be undone and won't trigger a refund, so file any Host Response Guarantee claim first.
They’ll say: “Saying the service is 'fully delivered at the point of fee payment' so nothing is ever refundable”
You say: Quote the Host Response Guarantee page back to them: 10+ personalised messages in the first 30 days, no replies, claim within 60 days. If you're in the UK or EU and asked for a refund within 14 days of paying without having used the service, also say you're relying on your statutory cancellation rights.
They’ll say: “Saying your outreach doesn't qualify because the messages were 'generic'”
You say: Attach screenshots or exports of every message, showing each one mentions something specific from the host's profile. Give the dates to show all 10+ were sent within the first 30 days.
They’ll say: “Not replying to support emails about account closures or disputes”
You say: Send the same request through the contact form at workaway.info/en/community/contact (including your username) and through the live chat paid members get. Then follow up by email to support@workaway.info with the ticket reference. If you still get nothing, a card chargeback is the fallback.
Your rights when cancelling
The law where you live is the strongest hook, lead with it when you contact the company.
Worldwide
- Card-issuer chargebackYour bank can reverse the charge.
Visa, Mastercard, and Amex all run chargeback schemes, “goods/services not as described” or “subscription not cancelled” are valid reason codes everywhere they operate. Your bank handles the dispute; workaway.info has ~45 days to defend.
Rights in other regions (United Kingdom, European Union)
United Kingdom
- Consumer Contracts Regulations 201314-day cooling-off on new subscriptions.
You can terminate any continuous service contract within 14 days of starting it and recover any payment, no questions asked. Applies regardless of workaway.info’s own policy.
- Consumer Rights Act 2015Services must be as described.
If workaway.info’s service was misrepresented or didn’t deliver what was promised, you have a statutory right to remedy (repair, refund, or price reduction) regardless of their terms.
European Union
- Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU14-day right of withdrawal across all EU states.
EU-wide statutory right to withdraw from any distance-sold contract within 14 days. Mirrored into local law in every member state. workaway.info must honour it regardless of where they’re headquartered.
Delete your workaway.info account (not just cancel)
Cancelling stops the billing; deleting removes your account and personal data. Do them in that order, deleting an account with an active subscription can leave the billing running with no way to log in and stop it.
If there’s no delete option in workaway.info’s account settings, email support@workaway.info with the subject Account deletion request, [your account email] and ask for your account and personal data to be erased under state privacy laws such as the CCPA. They’re typically required to act on it, most companies complete erasure within about 30 days, and you should ask for written confirmation when it’s done.
Common questions about cancelling workaway.info
**No.** Workaway says it never takes money automatically for your membership. You'll get two reminder emails as the year ends, and if you don't renew you won't be charged again. Your membership just expires after 12 months. Reviewers also say that if it lapses, your account data is kept, so you can rejoin later without starting from scratch. You don't need to cancel anything to avoid a renewal charge.
Money-back questions (windows, pro-rata, chargebacks) are covered in the workaway.info refund guide. Need a human for something else entirely? The workaway.info contact guide lists every channel that actually answers.
