- Phone: Call +1-855-815-5390 and say “cancel my service”. Expect a retention pitch, decline it twice and hold firm.
- Post: Not required for cancellation; Staples lists a postal address (Staples Rewards, 500 Staples Drive, Framingham, MA 01702) for rewards correspondence if email and phone fail.. Send it tracked so you can prove delivery.
- Email (fastest): Email
betty.thompson@staples.comwith the template below, the route that creates a paper trail and carries the refund ask.
Timing matters: Staples Plus auto-renews on your annual sign-up date with a reminder email due at least 30 days before, cancel before that date, or within 30 days of the charge for a full refund (pro-rata, minus benefits used, after 30 days). Rewards cancellations can take up to 10 weeks to finalize, so keep the dated email.

Cancellation Request, [your account email]Send this template
Hi Staples team, I'm writing to cancel the subscription on my account, [your account email]. Please treat this as formal notice of cancellation, effective from the end of the current billing period. Under the FTC's Click-to-Cancel rule, cancellation must be available through a channel as simple as the one I signed up through. Please confirm by reply that the subscription has been cancelled and that no further charges will be taken. If your policy allows it, I'd also appreciate a pro-rata refund for the unused portion of the current period. Best, [your name]
Wait for confirmation
Wait 24 hours. If there's no response, send a polite one-line follow-up referencing the original request.
Staples plans you can cancel
- Staples Plus (paid membership)$49.00/yr
Terms state membership can be cancelled at any time by emailing rewardsplus@staples.com or calling 1-855-815-5390; auto-renews on the annual sign-up date with a reminder email at least 30 days beforehand. Closed to new sign-ups since Feb 2024 per forum reports, with existing members grandfathered.
- Staples Easy Rewards (free loyalty)$0.00/mo
Rewards terms say membership may be cancelled at any time by notifying Member Services by email or phone, and that cancellation may take up to 10 weeks to finalize; unpaid rewards are forfeited on deactivation.
- AutoRestock product subscription
Product-level recurring orders (5% off one item, 10% off two or more). Staples' own page says you can update items, pause, skip or cancel anytime; managed under 'Manage AutoRestock subscriptions' in your account.
What happens to what you’ve already paid
Three different charge types, three different rules. The paid Staples Plus MEMBERSHIP FEE is fully refundable if you cancel within 30 days of the charge; after that Staples refunds a pro-rata share of the unused term to the original payment method, minus the value of benefits you already used. MERCHANDISE is separate: most products are returnable within 30 days, but technology, business machines and furniture drop to 14 days from receipt, and custom print, downloadable software and gift cards are generally non-returnable. AppleCare+ bought at Staples can be cancelled at Staples within 30 days for a full refund; beyond 30 days Apple handles it on a prorated basis. AutoRestock has no fee, an unwanted shipment is handled as a return, not a subscription refund.
“If the membership is cancelled within the first 30 days, the member will receive a full refund.”

Does Staples charge a cancellation fee?
We found no cancellation fee in Staples’s published terms. On a rolling plan you simply pay to the end of the current billing period and nothing after. If you’re inside a fixed minimum term, check your signup email for the end date, cancelling early is where fees usually hide.
What doesn’t work for cancelling Staples
Based on 5 sources, Reddit, app reviews, and direct testing. Skip these and save yourself the loop.
- ✕ Cancelling an order after it has entered fulfilment via the online cancel link, Staples' cancel-item flow frequently returns 'We are not able to cancel Order# at this time' once the order is picked; at that point your only route is a return/refund after delivery.
- ✕ Unsubscribing from Staples marketing emails or catalogues to stop billing, Email/catalogue opt-outs (1-800-333-3330 or the web form) only stop marketing contact, they do nothing to a paid Plus membership or an AutoRestock subscription.
- ✕ Assuming cancellation is instant and re-enrolling or expecting billing to stop the same day, Rewards terms warn cancellation may take up to 10 weeks to finalize, and members report the account still showing as a Plus member for 24 to 48 hours after receiving the cancellation email.
- ✕ Returning a laptop, printer or desk on the 30-day assumption, Technology, business machines and furniture are capped at 14 days from date of receipt, so the generic '30-day return policy' expires early on exactly the expensive items.
- ✕ Returning without a receipt and expecting cash back, Where the transaction can't be located, Staples limits you to in-store credit at the lowest selling price of the previous 30 days, requires government photo ID, and reserves the right to deny any return.
- ✕ Asking a store associate to cancel the membership, The membership terms route cancellation to Member Services by email or phone; stores handle merchandise returns, not the subscription record, so a store visit rarely produces written cancellation proof.
Cancelled Staples but still being charged?
Three common reasons, in order of likelihood:
- The cancellation didn’t actually complete. If you never received a written confirmation from Staples, treat it as not cancelled. Email
betty.thompson@staples.comreferencing your original request date and ask for written confirmation plus a refund of any charge taken since. - You cancelled in the wrong place. Subscriptions started through the App Store or Google Play bill through Apple or Google, cancelling on Staples’s site doesn’t touch them. Check Settings → Subscriptions on iPhone, or Play Store → Payments & subscriptions on Android.
- Billing lag. A charge that was already in flight when you cancelled can still land a few days later. One trailing charge can be normal; two is not.
If they keep charging after a confirmed cancellation, that’s chargeback territory: dispute the charge with your bank citing “subscription cancelled, merchant continued billing”. The yoink app also flags this automatically, it keeps watching your inbox after a confirmed cancellation and alerts you if Staples charges again.
How Staples will try to keep you
Staples may respond with a retention offer, a discount, a free month, or a downgrade to a cheaper tier. Don't engage with the counteroffer. Restate that you want a full cancellation and cite the consumer law again if they push back.
They’ll say: “Pro-rata refund quietly reduced by 'the value of benefits received' after day 30, with no itemisation.”
You say: Ask in writing: 'Please send the itemised calculation, the pro-rata amount, each benefit you are deducting, and its stated dollar value.' Free shipping and points you never redeemed are not a benefit received; ask for those lines to be removed and the balance refunded to the original card.
They’ll say: “'Cancellation may take up to 10 weeks to finalize' used to leave the renewal charge in place.”
You say: Reply: 'I accept processing time, but my cancellation is effective the date of this email. Confirm in writing that no renewal fee will be charged, and refund any fee taken after that date.' Keep the timestamped email as your proof.
They’ll say: “Being pushed to phone 1-855-815-5390 to cancel, where the request goes unrecorded.”
You say: The membership terms allow cancellation by email. Send it to rewardsplus@staples.com so there's a dated record, and if you did call, follow up in writing with the call date, time and agent name.
They’ll say: “Program devaluations (recycling limits, rewards changes) offered as 'extra points' instead of money back.”
You say: Forum members in the same position asked for a partial fee refund instead. Say: 'The benefits I paid for have materially changed. I'd like a pro-rata refund of the remaining term rather than points, please.'
They’ll say: “Store credit offered instead of a card refund because the receipt is missing.”
You say: Return to the original store with the exact card you paid on and ask them to look up the transaction, Staples can pull it and refund to the original payment method. If they can't, ask for the order/receipt reprint from My Orders first.
They’ll say: “Silence or generic replies from first-line support on refund escalations.”
You say: Escalate in one thread: reply-all to support@orders.staples.com and rewardsplus@staples.com, quote the 30-day full-refund clause, give a 7-day deadline, and state you'll raise a card chargeback for the unauthorised renewal if unresolved.
Your rights when cancelling
The law where you live is the strongest hook, lead with it when you contact the company.
United States
- FTC Click-to-Cancel Rule (2024+)Cancel must be as easy as sign-up.
The Federal Trade Commission’s Click-to-Cancel rule requires Staples to make cancelling at least as simple as signing up, same channel, same number of clicks. If they buried the cancel button or forced a phone call, they’re in violation; report to reportfraud.ftc.gov.
- California ARL (auto-renewal law)Renewal must be cancellable online.
California Business & Professions Code §17602 forces any company billing California residents on auto-renewal to provide an online cancel mechanism. Lawsuits have been won on this; companies often refund quickly when it’s cited.
Worldwide
- Card-issuer chargebackYour bank can reverse the charge.
Visa, Mastercard, and Amex all run chargeback schemes, “goods/services not as described” or “subscription not cancelled” are valid reason codes everywhere they operate. Your bank handles the dispute; Staples has ~45 days to defend.
Delete your Staples account (not just cancel)
Cancelling stops the billing; deleting removes your account and personal data. Do them in that order, deleting an account with an active subscription can leave the billing running with no way to log in and stop it.
If there’s no delete option in Staples’s account settings, email betty.thompson@staples.com with the subject Account deletion request, [your account email] and ask for your account and personal data to be erased under state privacy laws such as the CCPA. They’re typically required to act on it, most companies complete erasure within about 30 days, and you should ask for written confirmation when it’s done.
Common questions about cancelling Staples
Staples' own membership terms give two routes: **email rewardsplus@staples.com** or **call 1-855-815-5390**. Email is the better option because it timestamps the request. Include your name, member/account number, the email on the account and the line "Please cancel my Staples Plus membership effective today and confirm in writing." Members report getting a cancellation email back within about 24 hours, with the account still showing as Plus for another 24 to 48 hours while systems update. If you're inside 30 days of the annual charge, ask for the full refund in the same message.
Money-back questions (windows, pro-rata, chargebacks) are covered in the Staples refund guide. Need a human for something else entirely? The Staples contact guide lists every channel that actually answers.
