Cancellation Request, [your account email]Send this template
Hi HP Instant Ink team, I'm writing to cancel the subscription on my account, [your account email]. Please treat this as formal notice of cancellation, effective from the end of the current billing period. Under the FTC's Click-to-Cancel rule, cancellation must be available through a channel as simple as the one I signed up through. Please confirm by reply that the subscription has been cancelled and that no further charges will be taken. Best, [your name]

What happens to what you’ve already paid
HP Instant Ink bills at the start of each cycle, and cancellation only takes effect at the end of your current billing period, you are charged for that final month regardless. HP's terms state no refund is available for cancellation, and there is no pro-rata credit for unused pages. Some Reddit and forum users report getting a goodwill refund by calling support and quoting their cancellation confirmation, but this is discretionary, not policy. Note that Instant Ink cartridges stop working after the final cycle ends, even if ink remains.
“For example, if Your current Yearly Period runs from January 15th to the January 15th in the next year, and You submit a cancellation request to HP on April 15th, Your Service will be cancelled as of January 15th in the next year or when You have used all of Your Service Plan Pages, whichever is earlier. No refund will be available.”

Does HP Instant Ink charge a cancellation fee?
We found no cancellation fee in HP Instant Ink’s published terms. On a rolling plan you simply pay to the end of the current billing period and nothing after. If you’re inside a fixed minimum term, check your signup email for the end date, cancelling early is where fees usually hide.
What doesn’t work for cancelling HP Instant Ink
Based on 2 sources, Reddit, app reviews, and direct testing. Skip these and save yourself the loop.
- ✕ Assuming cancellation stops billing immediately, HP bills at the start of each cycle, so you're charged one final month and keep access until that cycle ends.
- ✕ Cancelling to keep using the remaining Instant Ink cartridges, Instant Ink cartridges are remotely disabled and stop working at the end of the final billing cycle, even if part-full.
- ✕ Just deleting the app or letting the card expire, The subscription is tied to the printer serial number; an expired card can disable the printer while charges/attempts continue. You must formally cancel and deregister the printer.
- ✕ Emailing HP to cancel, HP publishes no Instant Ink customer-service email; cancellation is only via the account portal, with phone/chat as backup.
- ✕ Cancelling only the paper add-on to keep ink, Cancelling the ink plan automatically cancels the paper subscription too; the reverse does not apply.
Cancelled HP Instant Ink but still being charged?
Three common reasons, in order of likelihood:
- The cancellation didn’t actually complete. If you never received a written confirmation from HP Instant Ink, treat it as not cancelled. Email
support@hp.comreferencing your original request date and ask for written confirmation plus a refund of any charge taken since. - You cancelled in the wrong place. Subscriptions started through the App Store or Google Play bill through Apple or Google, cancelling on HP Instant Ink’s site doesn’t touch them. Check Settings → Subscriptions on iPhone, or Play Store → Payments & subscriptions on Android.
- Billing lag. A charge that was already in flight when you cancelled can still land a few days later. One trailing charge can be normal; two is not.
If they keep charging after a confirmed cancellation, that’s chargeback territory: dispute the charge with your bank citing “subscription cancelled, merchant continued billing”. The yoink app also flags this automatically, it keeps watching your inbox after a confirmed cancellation and alerts you if HP Instant Ink charges again.
How HP Instant Ink will try to keep you
HP Instant Ink may respond with a retention offer, a discount, a free month, or a downgrade to a cheaper tier. Don't engage with the counteroffer. Restate that you want a full cancellation and cite the consumer law again if they push back.
They’ll say: “Offers a pause of up to 6 months instead of cancelling”
You say: A pause suspends fees but keeps you enrolled and doesn't stop the underlying commitment. If you want to leave for good, decline the pause and complete the full cancellation flow so the printer is deregistered.
They’ll say: “Steers you to a cheaper/lower plan rather than cancelling”
You say: Downgrading still ties you to Instant Ink cartridges and monthly billing. If you no longer want the service at all, insist on cancellation, not a plan change, a downgrade only takes effect after the current period anyway.
They’ll say: “Three acknowledgement checkboxes and a 'reason for leaving' survey during cancellation”
You say: The checkboxes (cartridges stop working, final charge, loss of rollover pages) and survey are friction, not a block. Tick all three, pick any reason, and click Continue Cancellation to finish, the survey does not change your rights.
They’ll say: “Support keeps you on hold/troubleshooting instead of processing cancellation”
You say: Cancel yourself online at hpinstantink.com, don't rely on phone agents. If you're wrongly charged after cancelling, phone the Instant Ink line with your cancellation confirmation email and case ID; if unresolved, escalate to HP's executive complaints/case-manager team (e.g. via a BBB or Resolver complaint) and, for UK card payments, raise a Section 75 or chargeback claim with your bank.
Your rights when cancelling
The law where you live is the strongest hook, lead with it when you contact the company.
United States
- FTC Click-to-Cancel Rule (2024+)Cancel must be as easy as sign-up.
The Federal Trade Commission’s Click-to-Cancel rule requires HP Instant Ink to make cancelling at least as simple as signing up, same channel, same number of clicks. If they buried the cancel button or forced a phone call, they’re in violation; report to reportfraud.ftc.gov.
- California ARL (auto-renewal law)Renewal must be cancellable online.
California Business & Professions Code §17602 forces any company billing California residents on auto-renewal to provide an online cancel mechanism. Lawsuits have been won on this; companies often refund quickly when it’s cited.
Worldwide
- Card-issuer chargebackYour bank can reverse the charge.
Visa, Mastercard, and Amex all run chargeback schemes, “goods/services not as described” or “subscription not cancelled” are valid reason codes everywhere they operate. Your bank handles the dispute; HP Instant Ink has ~45 days to defend.
Rights in other regions (United Kingdom, European Union)
United Kingdom
- Consumer Contracts Regulations 201314-day cooling-off on new subscriptions.
You can terminate any continuous service contract within 14 days of starting it and recover any payment, no questions asked. Applies regardless of HP Instant Ink’s own policy.
- Consumer Rights Act 2015Services must be as described.
If HP Instant Ink’s service was misrepresented or didn’t deliver what was promised, you have a statutory right to remedy (repair, refund, or price reduction) regardless of their terms.
European Union
- Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU14-day right of withdrawal across all EU states.
EU-wide statutory right to withdraw from any distance-sold contract within 14 days. Mirrored into local law in every member state. HP Instant Ink must honour it regardless of where they’re headquartered.
Delete your HP Instant Ink account (not just cancel)
Cancelling stops the billing; deleting removes your account and personal data. Do them in that order, deleting an account with an active subscription can leave the billing running with no way to log in and stop it.
If there’s no delete option in HP Instant Ink’s account settings, email support@hp.com with the subject Account deletion request, [your account email] and ask for your account and personal data to be erased under state privacy laws such as the CCPA. They’re typically required to act on it, most companies complete erasure within about 30 days, and you should ask for written confirmation when it’s done.
