The fastest way
HMRC is the UK tax authority, not a subscription, there is nothing to cancel. If you're owed a refund, check your P800 tax calculation and claim via the HMRC app or your Personal Tax Account (tax.service.gov.uk); online claims pay out in about 5 working days, cheques take up to 6 weeks. Self Assessment queries: 0300 200 3310.
Or let yoink do it for you.
30 seconds. AI emails HMRC, handles retention, chases the refund. You approve once, then sleep.

- Phone: Call 0300 200 3310 and say “cancel my service”. Expect a retention pitch, decline it twice and hold firm.
- Online (fastest): Direct cancel flow: www.tax.service.gov.uk/personal-account
- Post: Written Self Assessment queries and return amendments go to: Self Assessment, HM Revenue and Customs, BX9 1AS, United Kingdom.. Send it tracked so you can prove delivery.
- Email: HMRC doesn’t process cancellations by email. Still worth sending one: it dates your cancellation request in writing, which matters for disputes and refunds.
Timing matters: Self Assessment filing and payment deadline is 31 January; overpaid tax must be reclaimed within four years of the end of the tax year.
Cancelling a HMRC order by email
HMRC won’t action a cancellation from an email alone, use the fastest channel above for the cancellation itself. This email still earns its place: it puts your cancellation date in writing (your evidence if they keep billing) and it’s where the refund request happens.

HMRC’s refund policy
A 'refund' from HMRC means reclaiming overpaid tax, not cancelling a paid service. If your P800 tax calculation shows an overpayment, you actively claim it, HMRC no longer issues every repayment automatically. The fastest route is the HMRC app or Personal Tax Account, with an online bank transfer paying out in around 5 working days; a cheque takes up to 6 weeks. The time limit for reclaiming overpaid tax is four years from the end of the relevant tax year.
“You can claim using the online bank transfer service or request a cheque online.”

Does HMRC charge a cancellation fee?
We found no cancellation fee in HMRC’s published terms. On a rolling plan you simply pay to the end of the current billing period and nothing after. If you’re inside a fixed minimum term, check your signup email for the end date, cancelling early is where fees usually hide.
What doesn’t work for cancelling HMRC
Based on 5 sources, Reddit, app reviews, and direct testing. Skip these and save yourself the loop.
- ✕ Waiting for the money to arrive automatically after a P800, HMRC no longer issues all repayments automatically, if your P800 says to claim online, you must take action or you won't receive it.
- ✕ Responding to an email or text 'from HMRC' offering a refund, HMRC never notifies refunds by email or text; genuine P800 letters arrive by post or appear in your HMRC online account. Links in messages are likely scams.
- ✕ Emailing HMRC to request a refund, HMRC does not operate a public customer-service email for tax queries; refunds are claimed via the app, Personal Tax Account, phone or post, not email.
Cancelled HMRC but still being charged?
Three common reasons, in order of likelihood:
- The cancellation didn’t actually complete. If you never received a written confirmation from HMRC, treat it as not cancelled. Email
foi.request@hmrc.gov.ukreferencing your original request date and ask for written confirmation plus a refund of any charge taken since. - You cancelled in the wrong place. Subscriptions started through the App Store or Google Play bill through Apple or Google, cancelling on HMRC’s site doesn’t touch them. Check Settings → Subscriptions on iPhone, or Play Store → Payments & subscriptions on Android.
- Billing lag. A charge that was already in flight when you cancelled can still land a few days later. One trailing charge can be normal; two is not.
If they keep charging after a confirmed cancellation, that’s chargeback territory: dispute the charge with your bank citing “subscription cancelled, merchant continued billing”. The yoink app also flags this automatically, it keeps watching your inbox after a confirmed cancellation and alerts you if HMRC charges again.
How HMRC will try to keep you
HMRC may respond with a retention offer, a discount, a free month, or a downgrade to a cheaper tier. Don't engage with the counteroffer. Restate that you want a full cancellation and cite the consumer law again if they push back.
They’ll say: “Cheque-by-default delay instead of faster online payment”
You say: If HMRC defaults you to a posted cheque (up to 6 weeks), claim the online bank transfer instead via the HMRC app or Personal Tax Account for payment in roughly 5 working days.
They’ll say: “Refund left sitting unclaimed on your tax record”
You say: If a P800 shows an overpayment but nothing arrives, log in and actively claim it, it stays on your record but won't pay out until you act. You have up to four years to reclaim overpaid tax.
They’ll say: “Long helpline queues around the 31 January deadline”
You say: Skip peak days, advisers report calls connect fastest early morning around 8am, mid-week (Thursday), and away from Mondays and post-deadline periods. Use the digital assistant/webchat for common refund and registration questions first.
Your rights when cancelling
The law where you live is the strongest hook, lead with it when you contact the company.
Worldwide
- Card-issuer chargebackYour bank can reverse the charge.
Visa, Mastercard, and Amex all run chargeback schemes, “goods/services not as described” or “subscription not cancelled” are valid reason codes everywhere they operate. Your bank handles the dispute; HMRC has ~45 days to defend.
Delete your HMRC account (not just cancel)
Cancelling stops the billing; deleting removes your account and personal data. Do them in that order, deleting an account with an active subscription can leave the billing running with no way to log in and stop it.
If there’s no delete option in HMRC’s account settings, email foi.request@hmrc.gov.uk with the subject Account deletion request, [your account email] and ask for your account and personal data to be erased under data-protection law in most jurisdictions. They’re typically required to act on it, most companies complete erasure within about 30 days, and you should ask for written confirmation when it’s done.
