The fastest way
You can't cancel Google Voice by email, so do it online. For paid plans, go to Admin console › Billing › Subscriptions › Google Voice › More › Cancel subscription. Billing stops right away and is prorated. On a free account, go to voice.google.com › Settings › Account › Delete. To get unused credit back, use Refund balance at voice.google.com/u/0/billing (takes up to 10 days).
Or let yoink do it for you.
30 seconds. AI emails Google Voice, handles retention, chases the refund. You approve once, then sleep.

- Online (fastest): Direct cancel flow: admin.google.com/ac/billing/subscriptions
- Email: Google Voice doesn’t process cancellations by email. Still worth sending one: it dates your cancellation request in writing, which matters for disputes and refunds.
Timing matters: On the flexible monthly plan, cancelling stops billing immediately and you're charged only for days before cancellation. Workspace Annual/Fixed-Term plans are committed to the end of the term. After cancelling, numbers are held only for 60 days (Workspace downgrade) or 90 days (standalone or free), so port them out first. Free personal users delete the number at voice.google.com/u/0/settings › Account instead.
The email that backs it up
Google Voice won’t action a cancellation from an email alone, use the fastest channel above for the cancellation itself. This email still earns its place: it puts your cancellation date in writing (your evidence if they keep billing) and it’s where the refund request happens.

Cancellation Request, [your account email]Send this template
Hi Google Voice team, I'm writing to cancel the subscription on my account, [your account email]. Please treat this as formal notice of cancellation, effective from the end of the current billing period. Under the FTC's Click-to-Cancel rule, cancellation must be available through a channel as simple as the one I signed up through. Please confirm by reply that the subscription has been cancelled and that no further charges will be taken. If your policy allows it, I'd also appreciate a pro-rata refund for the unused portion of the current period. Best, [your name]

Google Voice plans you can cancel
- Google Voice (free personal)$0.00/mo
There is nothing to cancel. To leave, delete the number at voice.google.com › Settings › Account › Delete. You can only reclaim a deleted number within 90 days. Free numbers can be taken back if you don't make at least one outbound call or text every rolling three months.
- Voice Starter (standalone, personal Gmail)$10.00/mo
US only, for one user with an @gmail.com account. Cancel in admin.google.com (sign in with your Gmail) › Billing › Subscriptions › Google Voice › More › Cancel Subscription. You drop to a free Voice account automatically. Your number comes off the account but is held for you for 90 days, and you reclaim it via Get number. After the downgrade you lose Admin console access.
- Voice Standard (standalone, personal Gmail)$20.00/mo
One user only. A third-party source reports 50% off for the first 6 months, after which the full $20/month applies. Cancel in the Admin console the same way as Starter standalone. It can be downgraded to a free Voice account.
- Voice Starter (Workspace add-on)$10.00/mo
Up to 10 users, billed per user. Only an admin with the Billing management privilege can cancel, under Admin console › Billing › Subscriptions. Cancelling ends every Voice license. You also need an active Google Workspace subscription, which is billed separately.
- Voice Standard (Workspace add-on)$20.00/mo
No user cap. If you have 10 users or fewer, you can downgrade to Starter, but only by cancelling and re-adding Starter. You then have 60 days to reassign numbers before you lose them.
- Voice Premier (Workspace add-on)$30.00/mo
You can switch down to Standard under Billing › Buy or upgrade › Google Voice › Switch. Going down to Starter means cancelling Premier first. A downgrade removes international locations, BigQuery exports and automatic call recording.
- Prepaid calling credit (international and long-distance)
Credit can auto-recharge. To stop future top-ups, turn auto-recharge off at voice.google.com/u/0/settings. Uninstalling the app doesn't stop it.
What happens to what you’ve already paid
Voice subscriptions (Starter, Standard and Premier, standalone or Workspace add-on) on the flexible monthly plan can be cancelled any time. Billing stops right away and you pay only for the days before you cancelled. There is no fixed refund window, and Google doesn't say it refunds past full months. Workspace Annual/Fixed-Term plans are different: you're committed to pay until the end of the term. Prepaid calling credit is a separate product. You can refund the whole unused balance, or claim credit back for one call, at voice.google.com/u/0/billing, and the money returns to your original payment method within up to 10 days. If you cancel every Workspace subscription and still have a credit balance, Google refunds it automatically.
“You can cancel your Voice subscription at any time. If you cancel in the middle of your contract period, you're only charged for the days prior to your cancellation.”

Does Google Voice charge a cancellation fee?
Google Voice’s terms mention conditions worth checking before you cancel, see the plan notes and policy quote above for the specifics we found. In general: rolling monthly plans end at the period you’ve already paid for with nothing extra to pay, while minimum-term or contract plans can carry an early-exit charge until the term ends.
What doesn’t work for cancelling Google Voice
Based on 9 sources, Reddit, app reviews, and direct testing. Skip these and save yourself the loop.
- ✕ Emailing Google to cancel or ask for a refund, Google offers no direct customer service email. Support for Voice goes through help-center forms, the Admin console and community forums. Cancellation only happens in the Admin console or the Voice settings.
- ✕ Deleting your Voice number to stop a paid plan, Deleting a number at voice.google.com is the route for free personal accounts. Paid Starter/Standard standalone and Workspace subscriptions are cancelled in the Admin console under Billing › Subscriptions. Deleting the number won't stop the subscription.
- ✕ Cancelling Google Workspace while Voice is still active, Google blocks the Workspace cancellation while a Voice subscription is active. You have to cancel Voice first.
- ✕ Asking a non-admin user to cancel, Only an admin with the Billing management privilege can cancel a Voice subscription. Ordinary users can't cancel from voice.google.com.
- ✕ Calling Google's corporate switchboard, Consumer-advocacy directories say the headquarters line isn't meant for customer service, and Google has no general customer service phone number.
- ✕ Uninstalling the Voice app to stop credit charges, Auto-recharge of calling credit is tied to your account, not the app. Turn it off in voice.google.com settings.
Cancelled Google Voice but still being charged?
Three common reasons, in order of likelihood:
- The cancellation didn’t actually complete. If you never received a written confirmation from Google Voice, treat it as not cancelled. Email
google-voice-sip-link-interop@google.comreferencing your original request date and ask for written confirmation plus a refund of any charge taken since. - You cancelled in the wrong place. Subscriptions started through the App Store or Google Play bill through Apple or Google, cancelling on Google Voice’s site doesn’t touch them. Check Settings → Subscriptions on iPhone, or Play Store → Payments & subscriptions on Android.
- Billing lag. A charge that was already in flight when you cancelled can still land a few days later. One trailing charge can be normal; two is not.
If they keep charging after a confirmed cancellation, that’s chargeback territory: dispute the charge with your bank citing “subscription cancelled, merchant continued billing”. The yoink app also flags this automatically, it keeps watching your inbox after a confirmed cancellation and alerts you if Google Voice charges again.
How Google Voice will try to keep you
Google Voice may respond with a retention offer, a discount, a free month, or a downgrade to a cheaper tier. Don't engage with the counteroffer. Restate that you want a full cancellation and cite the consumer law again if they push back.
They’ll say: “Steering you to a downgrade instead (Premier to Standard switch, or the Standard to Starter path)”
You say: A downgrade keeps the billing going. If you want out, use More › Cancel Subscription in Billing › Subscriptions, not Buy or upgrade › Switch.
They’ll say: “Fear of losing your number: after cancelling, numbers are held for only 60 to 90 days”
You say: Port your numbers to another provider before you cancel. If you're downgrading a standalone plan, reclaim the number with Get number within 90 days.
They’ll say: “A 'reason for leaving' survey and confirmation box in the cancel flow”
You say: Pick any reason, tick the confirmation box, enter your admin email and click Cancel my subscription. You don't have to explain anything.
They’ll say: “An introductory discount: Voice Standard standalone is reportedly 50% off for the first 6 months”
You say: Put a reminder in your calendar before month 6 ends, because after that you pay the full $20/month. Cancelling stops billing straight away and is prorated.
They’ll say: “Losing access to your billing records after you cancel”
You say: Download every invoice before you cancel. After cancelling you can't get to them unless you still have Workspace, and you'll need them for any refund dispute.
Your rights when cancelling
The law where you live is the strongest hook, lead with it when you contact the company.
United States
- FTC Click-to-Cancel Rule (2024+)Cancel must be as easy as sign-up.
The Federal Trade Commission’s Click-to-Cancel rule requires Google Voice to make cancelling at least as simple as signing up, same channel, same number of clicks. If they buried the cancel button or forced a phone call, they’re in violation; report to reportfraud.ftc.gov.
- California ARL (auto-renewal law)Renewal must be cancellable online.
California Business & Professions Code §17602 forces any company billing California residents on auto-renewal to provide an online cancel mechanism. Lawsuits have been won on this; companies often refund quickly when it’s cited.
Worldwide
- Card-issuer chargebackYour bank can reverse the charge.
Visa, Mastercard, and Amex all run chargeback schemes, “goods/services not as described” or “subscription not cancelled” are valid reason codes everywhere they operate. Your bank handles the dispute; Google Voice has ~45 days to defend.
Delete your Google Voice account (not just cancel)
Cancelling stops the billing; deleting removes your account and personal data. Do them in that order, deleting an account with an active subscription can leave the billing running with no way to log in and stop it.
If there’s no delete option in Google Voice’s account settings, email google-voice-sip-link-interop@google.com with the subject Account deletion request, [your account email] and ask for your account and personal data to be erased under state privacy laws such as the CCPA. They’re typically required to act on it, most companies complete erasure within about 30 days, and you should ask for written confirmation when it’s done.
Common questions about cancelling Google Voice
Only an admin can cancel a **paid** Voice plan. Sign in at admin.google.com (standalone Starter/Standard users sign in with their Gmail), then go to **Menu › Billing › Subscriptions › Google Voice › More › Cancel Subscription**. Choose a reason, tick the confirmation box, enter your admin email and click **Cancel my subscription**. Billing on the flexible plan stops right away, and you pay only for the days used. Cancelling ends every Voice license, but your other Workspace apps keep running. You can't cancel by email or phone.
Money-back questions (windows, pro-rata, chargebacks) are covered in the Google Voice refund guide. Need a human for something else entirely? The Google Voice contact guide lists every channel that actually answers.
