- Phone: Call +44 20 7778 9300 and say “cancel my service”. Expect a retention pitch, decline it twice and hold firm.
- Post: Optional postal route for complaints only: FairFX, 3rd Floor, Vintners' Place, 68 Upper Thames Street, London, EC4V 3BJ. Send it tracked so you can prove delivery.
- Email (fastest): Email
help@fairfx.comwith the template below, the route that creates a paper trail and carries the refund ask.
Timing matters: Cancel the card within 14 days of receiving it to avoid the refund fee. Separately, cards expire after about three years and a £2/month administration fee starts eating any balance left on an expired card, withdraw or transfer funds before the expiry date.

Cancellation Request, [your account email]Send this template
Hi FairFX team, I'm writing to cancel the subscription on my account, [your account email]. Please treat this as formal notice of cancellation, effective from the end of the current billing period. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, I'm entitled to cancel this contract by notice through the same channel it was formed in. Please confirm by reply that the subscription has been cancelled and that no further charges will be taken. Best, [your name]
Wait for confirmation
Wait 24 hours. If there's no response, send a polite one-line follow-up referencing the original request.
FairFX plans you can cancel
- Basic account£0.00/mo
No subscription to cancel, closing means closing the whole e-money account by emailing help@fairfx.com or using live chat; there is no self-serve close flow in the app or web account.
- Standard account£0.00/mo
Standard adds Apple/Google/Samsung Pay; still no monthly management fee and still no online closure route, account type changes also require contacting the team and cards being reissued.
What happens to what you’ve already paid
FairFX is a prepaid multi-currency card and payments account, not a subscription, so there is no recurring fee to claw back, the money at stake is your loaded card/wallet balance. Cancel the CARD within 14 days of receiving it and the balance comes back fee-free, normally within five days after checks; outside that window a balance return to a UK bank account carries a £5 GBP-to-GBP refund/transfer fee and foreign currency is converted at the buyback rate, not your original load rate. Leftover balance on an EXPIRED card is a separate trap: a £2 per month administration fee eats it until you ask for it back. INTERNATIONAL PAYMENTS are different again, a transfer can only be stopped by contacting support before funds land with the recipient, and disputed/unauthorised card transactions must be reported within 13 months of the debit date.
“You have a legal right to cancel your card up to 14 days after you receive it without being charged the refund fee.”

Does FairFX charge a cancellation fee?
FairFX’s terms mention conditions worth checking before you cancel, see the plan notes and policy quote above for the specifics we found. In general: rolling monthly plans end at the period you’ve already paid for with nothing extra to pay, while minimum-term or contract plans can carry an early-exit charge until the term ends. If you signed up online within the last 14 days, the Consumer Contracts Regulations give you a cooling-off right to walk away, fee-free, for most digital subscriptions.
What doesn’t work for cancelling FairFX
Based on 7 sources, Reddit, app reviews, and direct testing. Skip these and save yourself the loop.
- ✕ Closing the account or cancelling the card from the website or app, There is no self-serve closure flow; the brand's own FAQ routes closure to email or live chat, and forum users report "There's no way to cancel the card or close the account online."
- ✕ Emptying a small leftover balance at an ATM, Each withdrawal carries a £1 issuer fee and ATMs dispense in fixed notes, so users report being told there are insufficient funds to withdraw the balance they can see.
- ✕ Leaving a few pounds on the card and walking away, Terms apply a £2 per month administration fee to expired cards with a leftover balance, which quietly drains whatever is left.
- ✕ Relying on live chat at weekends or during peak travel periods, Multiple reviewers report hours-long chat queues, no weekend cover in practice and unanswered emails, particularly around the 2023 platform migration.
- ✕ Cancelling an international payment after it has been processed, Once funds are processed and deposited with the recipient the transfer can no longer be cancelled, the only route is a recall request, not a cancellation.
- ✕ Asking for the original exchange rate back when unloading foreign currency, Terms state currency removed from the card is exchanged at the current buyback rate, not the rate at which it was loaded, so you can lose on the round trip.
Cancelled FairFX but still being charged?
Three common reasons, in order of likelihood:
- The cancellation didn’t actually complete. If you never received a written confirmation from FairFX, treat it as not cancelled. Email
help@fairfx.comreferencing your original request date and ask for written confirmation plus a refund of any charge taken since. - You cancelled in the wrong place. Subscriptions started through the App Store or Google Play bill through Apple or Google, cancelling on FairFX’s site doesn’t touch them. Check Settings → Subscriptions on iPhone, or Play Store → Payments & subscriptions on Android.
- Billing lag. A charge that was already in flight when you cancelled can still land a few days later. One trailing charge can be normal; two is not.
If they keep charging after a confirmed cancellation, that’s chargeback territory: dispute the charge with your bank citing “subscription cancelled, merchant continued billing”. The yoink app also flags this automatically, it keeps watching your inbox after a confirmed cancellation and alerts you if FairFX charges again.
How FairFX will try to keep you
FairFX may respond with a retention offer, a discount, a free month, or a downgrade to a cheaper tier. Don't engage with the counteroffer. Restate that you want a full cancellation and cite the consumer law again if they push back.
They’ll say: “Support suggests keeping the card open for future travel rather than closing it, since there is no monthly fee.”
You say: State plainly: "Please close the account and return the full available balance to my nominated UK bank account. I do not wish to keep the card open." Ask for written confirmation of closure and the date the balance was sent.
They’ll say: “Closure requests get funnelled into live chat, which queues for hours and drops out, then nothing is actioned.”
You say: Email help@fairfx.com from your registered address instead (they advertise email cover 7 days a week, 365 days a year) so you have a timestamped paper trail, and quote your account/card reference in the first line.
They’ll say: “A £5 GBP-to-GBP refund/transfer fee is deducted from the balance returned to you.”
You say: If you are within 14 days of receiving the card, quote their own clause: "You have a legal right to cancel your card up to 14 days after you receive it without being charged the refund fee." Ask for the fee to be waived and the funds returned within five days.
They’ll say: “Balance on an expired card is being eaten by the £2/month administration fee while your request sits unanswered.”
You say: Request the balance back AND ask for every administration fee charged after the date of your first written closure request to be refunded, the delay was theirs, not yours.
They’ll say: “No reply, or 'the finance department will be in touch' with no timescale, while your money sits in limbo.”
You say: Escalate to complaints@equalsmoney.com, the published complaints process says they will be in touch within 3 business days. If there is no final response within 8 weeks, a FCA-regulated firm's customer can take the matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service free of charge; say so in writing.
Your rights when cancelling
The law where you live is the strongest hook, lead with it when you contact the company.
United Kingdom
- Consumer Contracts Regulations 201314-day cooling-off on new subscriptions.
You can terminate any continuous service contract within 14 days of starting it and recover any payment, no questions asked. Applies regardless of FairFX’s own policy.
- Consumer Rights Act 2015Services must be as described.
If FairFX’s service was misrepresented or didn’t deliver what was promised, you have a statutory right to remedy (repair, refund, or price reduction) regardless of their terms.
Worldwide
- Card-issuer chargebackYour bank can reverse the charge.
Visa, Mastercard, and Amex all run chargeback schemes, “goods/services not as described” or “subscription not cancelled” are valid reason codes everywhere they operate. Your bank handles the dispute; FairFX has ~45 days to defend.
Delete your FairFX account (not just cancel)
Cancelling stops the billing; deleting removes your account and personal data. Do them in that order, deleting an account with an active subscription can leave the billing running with no way to log in and stop it.
If there’s no delete option in FairFX’s account settings, email help@fairfx.com with the subject Account deletion request, [your account email] and ask for your account and personal data to be erased under UK GDPR (Article 17, the right to erasure). They’re typically required to act on it, most companies complete erasure within about 30 days, and you should ask for written confirmation when it’s done.
Common questions about cancelling FairFX
There is no close button in the app or web account. FairFX's own FAQ says: contact the team at **help@fairfx.com** or through the Live Chat function on the website. Email is the stronger route, it is covered 7 days a week and gives you a timestamp. Send it **from your registered email address**, subject line *"Close my account and refund my balance"*, and include your name, account/card reference and the UK bank account (in your own name) you want the balance sent to. Ask for written confirmation of closure.
Money-back questions (windows, pro-rata, chargebacks) are covered in the FairFX refund guide. Need a human for something else entirely? The FairFX contact guide lists every channel that actually answers.
