Etsy’s refund policy

Etsy isn't the merchant, each seller sets their own return/refund policy, so cancellations within ~48 hours of ordering need to be requested directly from the seller. If the seller refuses, ignores you, or the item never arrives / arrives damaged / doesn't match the description, Etsy's Purchase Protection program covers a full refund up to $250 USD (including shipping & taxes) once the estimated delivery date passes and you open a case. Refunds go back to your original payment method (or Etsy credit) and typically appear within 3 to 5 days.

Does Etsy charge a cancellation fee?

We found no cancellation fee in Etsy’s published terms. On a rolling plan you simply pay to the end of the current billing period and nothing after. If you’re inside a fixed minimum term, check your signup email for the end date, cancelling early is where fees usually hide.

What doesn’t work for cancelling Etsy

Based on 2 sources, Reddit, app reviews, and direct testing. Skip these and save yourself the loop.

• ✕ Clicking a 'Cancel' button as the buyer, Buyers don't have a cancel button on Etsy. Only the seller (or Etsy) can issue a cancellation; buyers can only Request Cancellation through the seller.
• ✕ Requesting cancellation after 48 hours / after item shipped, The 'Request Cancellation' link is only available for two days after purchase and before the item has been shipped; after that you must message the seller directly.
• ✕ Canceling an order from the Etsy Seller app (as a seller), Sellers report the app only lets you refund, full cancellation must be done in a browser via Shop Manager.
• ✕ Closing your account with an outstanding balance or open case, Etsy hides the Close Account button if there's an amount due on your statement or an open case reported in your shop; you must settle/resolve first.
• ✕ Opening a case before the estimated delivery date, The 'Open a case' option only becomes available after the order's estimated delivery date has passed.
• ✕ Expecting a PayPal refund through Etsy, If the buyer paid via PayPal, Etsy doesn't push the refund, the seller has to refund through PayPal directly, otherwise the buyer must dispute with PayPal.

Cancelled Etsy but still being charged?

Three common reasons, in order of likelihood:

• The cancellation didn’t actually complete. If you never received a written confirmation from Etsy, treat it as not cancelled. Email support@etsy.com referencing your original request date and ask for written confirmation plus a refund of any charge taken since.
• You cancelled in the wrong place. Subscriptions started through the App Store or Google Play bill through Apple or Google, cancelling on Etsy’s site doesn’t touch them. Check Settings → Subscriptions on iPhone, or Play Store → Payments & subscriptions on Android.
• Billing lag. A charge that was already in flight when you cancelled can still land a few days later. One trailing charge can be normal; two is not.

If they keep charging after a confirmed cancellation, that’s chargeback territory: dispute the charge with your bank citing “subscription cancelled, merchant continued billing”. How Etsy will try to keep you

Etsy may respond with a retention offer, a discount, a free month, or a downgrade to a cheaper tier. Don't engage with the counteroffer. Restate that you want a full cancellation and cite the consumer law again if they push back.

• They’ll say: “Seller asks buyer to wait / promises to ship soon to avoid cancellation”

  You say: Etsy's policy gives you 48 hours from your first seller message to escalate. If the seller stalls past 48 hours, open a case, Etsy will resolve under Purchase Protection without seller consent.

• They’ll say: “Seller offers store credit or partial refund instead of cancellation”

  You say: Etsy's Cases Policy states buyers are entitled to a full refund including all taxes and shipping costs when the order doesn't meet program expectations. You can choose original payment method instead of Etsy credit.

• They’ll say: “'Made-to-order / personalized, non-refundable' clause in shop policy”

  You say: Seller policies cannot override Etsy Purchase Protection. If a made-to-order download isn't delivered within 7 days, or any item arrives not-as-described/damaged, Etsy refunds regardless of shop policy.

• They’ll say: “Vacation mode / shop suddenly closes with order pending”

  You say: Open a case immediately, Etsy frequently refunds orders left unfulfilled when a shop closes, even after delivery date passes. You can also raise a Section 75 / chargeback if Etsy stalls.

• They’ll say: “Account-close friction: 'you have an amount due'”

  You say: Etsy explicitly admits this hides the Close Account button. Pay off the balance and resolve open cases, then the button reappears, don't accept 'you can't close' as a final answer.

The law where you live is the strongest hook, lead with it when you contact the company.

Delete your Etsy account (not just cancel)

Cancelling stops the billing; deleting removes your account and personal data. Do them in that order, deleting an account with an active subscription can leave the billing running with no way to log in and stop it.

If there’s no delete option in Etsy’s account settings, email support@etsy.com with the subject Account deletion request, [your account email] and ask for your account and personal data to be erased under state privacy laws such as the CCPA. They’re typically required to act on it, most companies complete erasure within about 30 days, and you should ask for written confirmation when it’s done.
