Cancellation Request, [your account email]Send this template
Hi Backstage team, I'm writing to cancel the subscription on my account, [your account email]. Please treat this as formal notice of cancellation, effective from the end of the current billing period. Under the FTC's Click-to-Cancel rule, cancellation must be available through a channel as simple as the one I signed up through. Please confirm by reply that the subscription has been cancelled and that no further charges will be taken. Best, [your name]
Wait for confirmation
Wait 24 hours. If there's no response, send a polite one-line follow-up referencing the original request.
What happens to what you’ve already paid
This policy covers Backstage digital subscription charges only. Semiannual and annual plans, whether a first purchase or a renewal, get a full refund if you ask within 30 days of the charge. Monthly plans get no refund unless you were double-billed or hit by a clerical error, and there are no pro-rata refunds: cancelling only stops the next charge. If you paid through the iOS or Android app, Backstage can't refund you, so ask Apple or Google. No published refund policy covers one-off casting or job-listing fees paid by creators.
“For all initial purchases of subscriptions longer than one month, you may cancel prior to renewal to prevent future renewal charges; or cancel during the first thirty (30) days after purchase or renewal to remain eligible for a full refund on the subscription payment.”

Does Backstage charge a cancellation fee?
We found no cancellation fee in Backstage’s published terms. On a rolling plan you simply pay to the end of the current billing period and nothing after. If you’re inside a fixed minimum term, check your signup email for the end date, cancelling early is where fees usually hide.
What doesn’t work for cancelling Backstage
Based on 7 sources, Reddit, app reviews, and direct testing. Skip these and save yourself the loop.
- ✕ Deleting the Backstage app from your phone, Backstage's help center says deleting the app does not cancel your subscription or stop billing. You have to turn off auto-renew yourself.
- ✕ Asking Backstage to refund an App Store or Google Play charge, Backstage says Apple and Google don't let it cancel or refund subscriptions bought through their stores. You have to request the refund from Apple or Google.
- ✕ Calling the customer service number, The widely listed +1 917-725-6367 number is reported to be voicemail-only. Callers hear a message telling them to email customers@backstage.com and not to leave a message. Other listed numbers are reported as invalid.
- ✕ Relying on the AI chat widget for a refund, Several Trustpilot and BBB complaints say the AI chat promises a human will follow up, then nothing happens for days. Email gives you a timestamped record; chat doesn't.
- ✕ Deleting or deactivating your account while the subscription is active, The help center says that if you turn off your subscription by removing your account, you will not be eligible for a refund. Full deletion is permanent and wipes media across Backstage, Mandy and StarNow.
- ✕ Requesting a refund on a monthly plan, Under the terms and help center, monthly subscriptions never get refunds except for double billing or clerical errors.
- ✕ Requesting an annual refund more than 30 days after the renewal charge, In BBB responses, Backstage has refused refunds requested outside the 30-day window, citing the terms. This includes a customer who said they didn't notice the charge until it showed on their statement.
- ✕ Unsubscribing from emails and assuming the subscription is cancelled, Email preferences and billing are separate. Backstage says cancelling does not unsubscribe you from emails, and the reverse is also true.
Cancelled Backstage but still being charged?
Three common reasons, in order of likelihood:
- The cancellation didn’t actually complete. If you never received a written confirmation from Backstage, treat it as not cancelled. Email
customers@backstage.comreferencing your original request date and ask for written confirmation plus a refund of any charge taken since. - You cancelled in the wrong place. Subscriptions started through the App Store or Google Play bill through Apple or Google, cancelling on Backstage’s site doesn’t touch them. Check Settings → Subscriptions on iPhone, or Play Store → Payments & subscriptions on Android.
- Billing lag. A charge that was already in flight when you cancelled can still land a few days later. One trailing charge can be normal; two is not.
If they keep charging after a confirmed cancellation, that’s chargeback territory: dispute the charge with your bank citing “subscription cancelled, merchant continued billing”. The yoink app also flags this automatically, it keeps watching your inbox after a confirmed cancellation and alerts you if Backstage charges again.
How Backstage will try to keep you
Backstage may respond with a retention offer, a discount, a free month, or a downgrade to a cheaper tier. Don't engage with the counteroffer. Restate that you want a full cancellation and cite the consumer law again if they push back.
They’ll say: “Refusing a refund by saying 'you're not eligible per the terms you agreed to at sign-up'”
You say: Quote their own clause back: semiannual and annual plans are refundable if you cancel 'during the first thirty (30) days after purchase or renewal.' Give the exact charge date and the date of your request to show you're inside the window.
They’ll say: “AI chat stall ('your issue has been escalated to a human') followed by silence”
You say: Skip the chat and email customers@backstage.com with a dated cancellation and refund request. Backstage reps on Trustpilot have told stuck customers to email again with a specific subject line ('Trustpilot Review') so a named rep would look into it personally. Mention any public review you've posted.
They’ll say: “Ignoring tickets until a public complaint is filed”
You say: BBB records show Backstage processing cancellations and refunds after customers filed complaints. In one case an $84.95 refund was handled within days. If email gets no reply in 3 business days, file a BBB complaint that cites the 30-day clause.
They’ll say: “Blaming the customer for picking an annual plan ('you could have chosen a shorter subscription')”
You say: Which plan you chose doesn't matter. The terms give annual and semiannual plans a full 30-day refund window. Ask them to apply the policy as written.
They’ll say: “Delaying a promised 'exception' refund until a bank dispute clears”
You say: One BBB complaint says Backstage promised an exception refund but held it for months while a chargeback was pending. Choose one route: either ask for the refund in writing before disputing, or let the card dispute run. Don't count on both.
They’ll say: “Self-cancel blocked when the account is overdue, or for print subscribers”
You say: The help center says self-service cancellation doesn't work for overdue accounts or print subscriptions. Email support with a clear written cancellation instruction. Backstage says it honors the timestamp on requests sent after hours, as long as they arrive before billing.
Your rights when cancelling
The law where you live is the strongest hook, lead with it when you contact the company.
United States
- FTC Click-to-Cancel Rule (2024+)Cancel must be as easy as sign-up.
The Federal Trade Commission’s Click-to-Cancel rule requires Backstage to make cancelling at least as simple as signing up, same channel, same number of clicks. If they buried the cancel button or forced a phone call, they’re in violation; report to reportfraud.ftc.gov.
- California ARL (auto-renewal law)Renewal must be cancellable online.
California Business & Professions Code §17602 forces any company billing California residents on auto-renewal to provide an online cancel mechanism. Lawsuits have been won on this; companies often refund quickly when it’s cited.
Worldwide
- Card-issuer chargebackYour bank can reverse the charge.
Visa, Mastercard, and Amex all run chargeback schemes, “goods/services not as described” or “subscription not cancelled” are valid reason codes everywhere they operate. Your bank handles the dispute; Backstage has ~45 days to defend.
Rights in other regions (United Kingdom, European Union)
United Kingdom
- Consumer Contracts Regulations 201314-day cooling-off on new subscriptions.
You can terminate any continuous service contract within 14 days of starting it and recover any payment, no questions asked. Applies regardless of Backstage’s own policy.
- Consumer Rights Act 2015Services must be as described.
If Backstage’s service was misrepresented or didn’t deliver what was promised, you have a statutory right to remedy (repair, refund, or price reduction) regardless of their terms.
European Union
- Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU14-day right of withdrawal across all EU states.
EU-wide statutory right to withdraw from any distance-sold contract within 14 days. Mirrored into local law in every member state. Backstage must honour it regardless of where they’re headquartered.
Delete your Backstage account (not just cancel)
Cancelling stops the billing; deleting removes your account and personal data. Do them in that order, deleting an account with an active subscription can leave the billing running with no way to log in and stop it.
If there’s no delete option in Backstage’s account settings, email customers@backstage.com with the subject Account deletion request, [your account email] and ask for your account and personal data to be erased under state privacy laws such as the CCPA. They’re typically required to act on it, most companies complete erasure within about 30 days, and you should ask for written confirmation when it’s done.
Common questions about cancelling Backstage
