Cancellation Request, [your account email]Send this template
Hi AWS team, I'm writing to cancel the subscription on my account, [your account email]. Please treat this as formal notice of cancellation, effective from the end of the current billing period. Under the FTC's Click-to-Cancel rule, cancellation must be available through a channel as simple as the one I signed up through. Please confirm by reply that the subscription has been cancelled and that no further charges will be taken. If your policy allows it, I'd also appreciate a pro-rata refund for the unused portion of the current period. Best, [your name]
Wait for confirmation
Wait 24 hours. If there's no response, send a polite one-line follow-up referencing the original request.
AWS plans you can cancel
- Pay-as-you-go
No long-term contract; stops when you terminate resources and close the account.
- Savings Plans (1- or 3-year commit)
1- or 3-year commitment, cannot be cancelled mid-term; commitment runs to end of term.
- AWS Free Tier$0.00/mo
Close the account before free-tier expiry; resources left running after limits are billed at pay-as-you-go rates.
- Private Pricing
Negotiated commitment-based discount; early exit governed by your private agreement.
AWS’s refund policy
AWS bills strictly for usage, there are no termination fees, but charges already incurred (including forgotten EC2 instances, RDS databases, NAT gateways, or Elastic IPs) are generally non-refundable. The exception is courtesy refunds: AWS Billing Support routinely issues one-time credits for new users, students, or free-tier overage shocks when you open a polite billing case under 'Account and Billing'. EU customers can also invoke the 14-day right of withdrawal for unused subscriptions.
“You only pay for the services you consume, and once you stop using them, there are no additional costs or termination fees.”

Does AWS charge a cancellation fee?
AWS’s terms mention conditions worth checking before you cancel, see the plan notes and policy quote above for the specifics we found. In general: rolling monthly plans end at the period you’ve already paid for with nothing extra to pay, while minimum-term or contract plans can carry an early-exit charge until the term ends.
What doesn’t work for cancelling AWS
Based on 6 sources, Reddit, app reviews, and direct testing. Skip these and save yourself the loop.
- ✕ Removing your card from billing settings, Deleting your payment method does not cancel AWS, services keep running and the unpaid balance is sent to collections.
- ✕ Just stopping (not terminating) EC2 instances, Stopped instances still incur EBS volume, Elastic IP, and snapshot charges. You must terminate.
- ✕ Closing the account while resources are running, Usage incurred before closure is still billable, and accounts remain in a 90-day post-closure window where forgotten resources can still trigger invoices.
- ✕ Cancelling Savings Plans early, 1- or 3-year Savings Plan commitments cannot be cancelled, the hourly commitment continues to bill to end of term.
- ✕ Posting on AWS re:Post for a refund, re:Post is a community forum and cannot process billing or refund requests, only a Support Case can.
- ✕ Closing the account only in one region, Resources live per-region; you must check every AWS Region you ever used or charges continue.
Cancelled AWS but still being charged?
Three common reasons, in order of likelihood:
- The cancellation didn’t actually complete. If you never received a written confirmation from AWS, treat it as not cancelled. Email
trustandsafety@support.aws.comreferencing your original request date and ask for written confirmation plus a refund of any charge taken since. - You cancelled in the wrong place. Subscriptions started through the App Store or Google Play bill through Apple or Google, cancelling on AWS’s site doesn’t touch them. Check Settings → Subscriptions on iPhone, or Play Store → Payments & subscriptions on Android.
- You're inside a minimum term. Some AWS plans keep charging until a fixed term ends even after you cancel, check the plan notes above.
If they keep charging after a confirmed cancellation, that’s chargeback territory: dispute the charge with your bank citing “subscription cancelled, merchant continued billing”. The yoink app also flags this automatically, it keeps watching your inbox after a confirmed cancellation and alerts you if AWS charges again.
How AWS will try to keep you
AWS may respond with a retention offer, a discount, a free month, or a downgrade to a cheaper tier. Don't engage with the counteroffer. Restate that you want a full cancellation and cite the consumer law again if they push back.
They’ll say: “AWS offers a one-time courtesy credit instead of a refund”
You say: Accept the credit only if you intend to keep using AWS. If you're closing the account, push back: ask for the charge to be reversed to the original card, citing that you were a new user on Free Tier and the billing UI didn't surface the overage in time.
They’ll say: “Support asks you to 'just terminate the resource and monitor next month'”
You say: Politely insist on a billing adjustment for the current invoice now, terminating prevents future charges but does not address the disputed line item. Reference the specific invoice number and dollar amount.
They’ll say: “First-line agent denies refund citing 'usage was consumed'”
You say: Escalate the case (reply with 'I'd like this reviewed by a billing specialist / account manager'). AWS is known to be customer-friendly on second review, especially for first-time, student, or learning-purpose accounts.
They’ll say: “Suggests downgrading to AWS Free Tier instead of closing”
You say: If you genuinely won't use AWS, close the account, Free Tier resources left running after the 12-month window auto-convert to paid pricing and re-create the same bill-shock problem.
Your rights when cancelling
The law where you live is the strongest hook, lead with it when you contact the company.
United States
- California ARL (auto-renewal law)Renewal must be cancellable online.
California Business & Professions Code §17602 forces any company billing California residents on auto-renewal to provide an online cancel mechanism. Lawsuits have been won on this; companies often refund quickly when it’s cited.
Worldwide
- Card-issuer chargebackYour bank can reverse the charge.
Visa, Mastercard, and Amex all run chargeback schemes, “goods/services not as described” or “subscription not cancelled” are valid reason codes everywhere they operate. Your bank handles the dispute; AWS has ~45 days to defend.
Rights in other regions (United Kingdom, European Union)
United Kingdom
- Consumer Contracts Regulations 201314-day cooling-off on new subscriptions.
You can terminate any continuous service contract within 14 days of starting it and recover any payment, no questions asked. Applies regardless of AWS’s own policy.
- Consumer Rights Act 2015Services must be as described.
If AWS’s service was misrepresented or didn’t deliver what was promised, you have a statutory right to remedy (repair, refund, or price reduction) regardless of their terms.
European Union
- Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU14-day right of withdrawal across all EU states.
EU-wide statutory right to withdraw from any distance-sold contract within 14 days. Mirrored into local law in every member state. AWS must honour it regardless of where they’re headquartered.
Delete your AWS account (not just cancel)
Cancelling stops the billing; deleting removes your account and personal data. Do them in that order, deleting an account with an active subscription can leave the billing running with no way to log in and stop it.
If there’s no delete option in AWS’s account settings, email trustandsafety@support.aws.com with the subject Account deletion request, [your account email] and ask for your account and personal data to be erased under state privacy laws such as the CCPA. They’re typically required to act on it, most companies complete erasure within about 30 days, and you should ask for written confirmation when it’s done.
Common questions about cancelling AWS
Sign in to the AWS Console **as the root user**, then: (1) terminate every running resource in every region, EC2 instances, RDS databases, S3 buckets, EBS volumes, Elastic IPs, NAT gateways; (2) cancel any AWS Marketplace subscriptions via **AWS Marketplace → Manage subscriptions → Actions → Cancel subscription**; (3) open **My Account → Close Account**, tick the acknowledgement and confirm. The account then enters a 90-day deactivation window before data is permanently deleted.
Money-back questions (windows, pro-rata, chargebacks) are covered in the AWS refund guide. Need a human for something else entirely? The AWS contact guide lists every channel that actually answers.
