The fastest way
American Express does not cancel by email. Call the number on your card (US +1-800-528-4800, UK 0800 917 8047) or use the logged-in chat, closure is normally confirmed in the same session. For a fee refund, write with subject "Annual fee refund request, account ending XXXX, closure within 30 days".
Or let yoink do it for you.

- Phone (fastest): Call +1-800-528-4800 and say “cancel my service”. Expect a retention pitch, decline it twice and hold firm.
- Post: A written closure notice can be mailed (US complaints/correspondence: American Express, 200 Vesey Street, New York, NY 10285; UK: Executive Customer Relations Department, 1 John Street, Brighton, BN88 1NH), useful as a paper trail, but phone or logged-in chat closes the account far faster.. Send it tracked so you can prove delivery.
- Email: American Express doesn’t process cancellations by email. Still worth sending one: it dates your cancellation request in writing, which matters for disputes and refunds.
Timing matters: Close within 30 days of the closing date of the statement showing the annual membership fee for a full refund, e.g. fee on a statement closing 2 April means you have until 2 May. After that the fee is non-refundable; only a downgrade prorates it. The account balance must be zero before Amex will close it.
The email that backs it up
American Express won’t action a cancellation from an email alone, use the fastest channel above for the cancellation itself. This email still earns its place: it puts your cancellation date in writing (your evidence if they keep billing) and it’s where the refund request happens.

Cancellation Request, [your account email]Send this template
Hi American Express team, I'm writing to cancel the subscription on my account, [your account email]. Please treat this as formal notice of cancellation, effective from the end of the current billing period. Under the FTC's Click-to-Cancel rule, cancellation must be available through a channel as simple as the one I signed up through. Please confirm by reply that the subscription has been cancelled and that no further charges will be taken. Best, [your name]
Wait for confirmation
Wait 24 hours. If there's no response, send a polite one-line follow-up referencing the original request.
What happens to what you’ve already paid
Two completely different refund rules live under the Amex roof and they get mixed up constantly. (1) The ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP FEE: Amex refunds it in full if you tell them you're closing the account within 30 days of the closing date of the statement the fee appeared on; after that window a cancellation gets you nothing back, though a downgrade/product change to a cheaper card is prorated even outside 30 days. (2) MERCHANT CHARGES on the card (a bad hotel, a subscription you cancelled, a double-billed flight): these are not refunded by Amex policy at all, they go through the card dispute/chargeback process per transaction, opened in your online account or by phone, with no fixed self-serve window. Membership Rewards points are a third thing again: they are forfeited on closure unless you keep another eligible Card open, so redeem before you close.
“If an Annual Membership fee applies to your Account, we will refund this fee if you notify us that you are voluntarily closing your Account within 30 days of the Closing Date of the billing statement on which that fee appears.”

Does American Express charge a cancellation fee?
American Express’s terms mention conditions worth checking before you cancel, see the plan notes and policy quote above for the specifics we found. In general: rolling monthly plans end at the period you’ve already paid for with nothing extra to pay, while minimum-term or contract plans can carry an early-exit charge until the term ends.
What doesn’t work for cancelling American Express
Based on 7 sources, Reddit, app reviews, and direct testing. Skip these and save yourself the loop.
- ✕ Emailing a public customer-service address to close the account, Amex publishes no consumer support email in most markets, the German Impressum tells you to log in and send a secure message instead of emailing, and UK forum users note Amex doesn't readily advertise an email address. Closures are taken by phone or authenticated chat only.
- ✕ Cancelling from the online account dashboard, There is no self-serve close button; guides consistently report you cannot cancel Amex cards online through your account, you must use the logged-in chat or call.
- ✕ Asking for a prorated annual fee refund after the 30-day window, Outside 30 days from the statement closing date the annual membership fee is non-refundable on a cancellation; no full or prorated refund is offered.
- ✕ Closing the account while a balance is outstanding, The account has to be at a zero balance before Amex will close it, so a cancellation call with a live balance just becomes a payment call.
- ✕ Downgrading inside the 30-day window expecting the full fee back, A downgrade prorates the annual fee rather than refunding it in full, people who product-changed inside the 30 days still lost a few days' worth of fee.
- ✕ Cancelling a new card early to dodge the fee, Closing or downgrading inside the first year has led to welcome bonuses being clawed back at Amex's discretion, and reopening a closed card has carried a $25 reinstatement fee.
Cancelled American Express but still being charged?
Three common reasons, in order of likelihood:
- The cancellation didn’t actually complete. If you never received a written confirmation from American Express, treat it as not cancelled. Email
amexinsurancegermany@aexp.comreferencing your original request date and ask for written confirmation plus a refund of any charge taken since. - You cancelled in the wrong place. Subscriptions started through the App Store or Google Play bill through Apple or Google, cancelling on American Express’s site doesn’t touch them. Check Settings → Subscriptions on iPhone, or Play Store → Payments & subscriptions on Android.
- Billing lag. A charge that was already in flight when you cancelled can still land a few days later. One trailing charge can be normal; two is not.
If they keep charging after a confirmed cancellation, that’s chargeback territory: dispute the charge with your bank citing “subscription cancelled, merchant continued billing”. The yoink app also flags this automatically, it keeps watching your inbox after a confirmed cancellation and alerts you if American Express charges again.
How American Express will try to keep you
American Express may respond with a retention offer, a discount, a free month, or a downgrade to a cheaper tier. Don't engage with the counteroffer. Restate that you want a full cancellation and cite the consumer law again if they push back.
They’ll say: “Retention offer: statement credit or bonus points to keep the card open instead of closing”
You say: It's fine to hear the offer, but get it in writing on the chat transcript with the exact credit amount and posting date. If it doesn't cover the fee you're trying to escape, restate plainly: "Please close the account today and refund the annual membership fee under the 30-day closure rule."
They’ll say: “Downgrade pitch, rep offers to move you to a lower-fee or no-fee card instead of closing”
You say: A downgrade only prorates your fee; a closure inside 30 days of the statement closing date refunds it in full. If you're inside that window and want the money back, decline the product change and ask for closure. If you're outside it, a downgrade is genuinely the better lever, ask for it explicitly.
They’ll say: “Fee waiver offered mid-call to stop the cancellation”
You say: Ask which statement the waiver posts to and whether it re-bills next year. A one-year waiver resets the same decision in 12 months, note the renewal date now and diarise the 30-day window.
They’ll say: “"Your balance must be zero before we can close the account"”
You say: Pay the balance to zero, then call back the same day and state that your closure instruction dates from the first call. Ask for the original call date to be logged as the cancellation-request date so the 30-day fee window is measured from then.
They’ll say: “Loop of transfers and repeat calls with no resolution”
You say: Stop calling and go to writing: log a formal complaint (in the UK, phone 0800 917 8047 or write to the Executive Customer Relations Department, 1 John Street, Brighton, BN88 1NH). Amex UK commits to acknowledging in writing within three business days, and an unresolved complaint after 35 business days can be escalated onward. In the US, an unanswered written complaint can be filed with the CFPB, which the issuer must respond to.
They’ll say: “Chat rep sends disclosures and then goes quiet before confirming closure”
You say: Don't leave the chat until you have the words "account closed" plus a reference number, then save the transcript. Reports of closures only completing after the disclosure is accepted mean an abandoned chat can leave the card open and the fee standing.
Your rights when cancelling
The law where you live is the strongest hook, lead with it when you contact the company.
Worldwide
- Card-issuer chargebackYour bank can reverse the charge.
Visa, Mastercard, and Amex all run chargeback schemes, “goods/services not as described” or “subscription not cancelled” are valid reason codes everywhere they operate. Your bank handles the dispute; American Express has ~45 days to defend.
Rights in other regions (United Kingdom, European Union)
United Kingdom
- Consumer Contracts Regulations 201314-day cooling-off on new subscriptions.
You can terminate any continuous service contract within 14 days of starting it and recover any payment, no questions asked. Applies regardless of American Express’s own policy.
- Consumer Rights Act 2015Services must be as described.
If American Express’s service was misrepresented or didn’t deliver what was promised, you have a statutory right to remedy (repair, refund, or price reduction) regardless of their terms.
European Union
- Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU14-day right of withdrawal across all EU states.
EU-wide statutory right to withdraw from any distance-sold contract within 14 days. Mirrored into local law in every member state. American Express must honour it regardless of where they’re headquartered.
Delete your American Express account (not just cancel)
Cancelling stops the billing; deleting removes your account and personal data. Do them in that order, deleting an account with an active subscription can leave the billing running with no way to log in and stop it.
If there’s no delete option in American Express’s account settings, email amexinsurancegermany@aexp.com with the subject Account deletion request, [your account email] and ask for your account and personal data to be erased under state privacy laws such as the CCPA. They’re typically required to act on it, most companies complete erasure within about 30 days, and you should ask for written confirmation when it’s done.
Common questions about cancelling American Express
Not through your account dashboard, Amex has no self-serve close button. The two routes that actually work are the **logged-in chat** (the blue chat box bottom-right once you sign in; type "cancel a card" and pick that intent) and **calling the number on the back of your card** (US +1-800-528-4800 or +1-800-383-4800, 24/7; from outside the US you can call collect on +1-336-393-1111; UK 0800 917 8047). Chat gives you a written transcript, which is worth more than a phone call if you later need to prove the closure date for a fee refund.
Money-back questions (windows, pro-rata, chargebacks) are covered in the American Express refund guide. Need a human for something else entirely? The American Express contact guide lists every channel that actually answers.
