Cancellation Request, [your account email]Send this template
Hi Airbnb team, I'm writing to cancel the subscription on my account, [your account email]. Please treat this as formal notice of cancellation, effective from the end of the current billing period. Under the FTC's Click-to-Cancel rule, cancellation must be available through a channel as simple as the one I signed up through. Please confirm by reply that the subscription has been cancelled and that no further charges will be taken. If your policy allows it, I'd also appreciate a pro-rata refund for the unused portion of the current period. Best, [your name]
Wait for confirmation
Wait 24 hours. If there's no response, send a polite one-line follow-up referencing the original request.
Airbnb plans you can cancel
- Flexible cancellation policy
Full refund of the nightly rate for cancellations made at least 5 days prior to check-in (set by the host).
- Moderate cancellation policy
Full refund of the nightly rate for cancellations made at least 5 days prior to check-in.
- Strict cancellation policy
Limited refund window after booking; non-refundable after that point unless host or Airbnb policy overrides.
- Non-refundable listing option
Some listings may be non-refundable, or only partially refundable, after certain dates and times.
- Services & Experiences
Most services and experiences have a 1-day cancellation policy; some hosts choose a 3-day policy.
Airbnb’s refund policy
Airbnb itself doesn't set a single refund window, the host's cancellation policy (Flexible, Moderate, Strict, or Non-refundable) controls what you get back. Flexible and Moderate listings give a full refund of the nightly rate if you cancel at least 5 days before check-in. Eligible refunds are issued to the original payment method within 10 business days. You have up to 60 days after checkout to file a Resolution Center request if something went wrong with the stay.
“If you cancel outside of the stated free cancellation period, you won't receive a refund, unless one of the circumstances outlined in our guest cancellation policy for services and experiences applies to your reservation, or if the host, at their discretion, agrees to give you a full refund.”

Does Airbnb charge a cancellation fee?
We found no cancellation fee in Airbnb’s published terms. On a rolling plan you simply pay to the end of the current billing period and nothing after. If you’re inside a fixed minimum term, check your signup email for the end date, cancelling early is where fees usually hide.
What doesn’t work for cancelling Airbnb
Based on 5 sources, Reddit, app reviews, and direct testing. Skip these and save yourself the loop.
- ✕ Calling and demanding a refund without first messaging the host, Airbnb requires guests to notify the host before escalating; agents will route you back to the host or Resolution Center.
- ✕ Cancelling on behalf of the host when they ask you to, If you cancel, the host's cancellation policy applies and you may forfeit most of the money. Make the host cancel so you're eligible for a full refund.
- ✕ Filing a credit-card chargeback as the first move, Disputing through your bank can lead to Airbnb account suspension if Airbnb considers the dispute misused.
- ✕ Reporting an in-stay issue more than 72 hours after discovering it, You must start a cancellation request within 72 hours of finding the problem to be eligible for a refund under the Rebooking and Refund Policy.
- ✕ Submitting a Resolution Center request more than 60 days after checkout, Airbnb's Resolution Center caps requests at 60 days after the reservation's checkout date.
Cancelled Airbnb but still being charged?
Three common reasons, in order of likelihood:
- The cancellation didn’t actually complete. If you never received a written confirmation from Airbnb, treat it as not cancelled. Email
support@airbnb.comreferencing your original request date and ask for written confirmation plus a refund of any charge taken since. - You cancelled in the wrong place. Subscriptions started through the App Store or Google Play bill through Apple or Google, cancelling on Airbnb’s site doesn’t touch them. Check Settings → Subscriptions on iPhone, or Play Store → Payments & subscriptions on Android.
- Billing lag. A charge that was already in flight when you cancelled can still land a few days later. One trailing charge can be normal; two is not.
If they keep charging after a confirmed cancellation, that’s chargeback territory: dispute the charge with your bank citing “subscription cancelled, merchant continued billing”. The yoink app also flags this automatically, it keeps watching your inbox after a confirmed cancellation and alerts you if Airbnb charges again.
How Airbnb will try to keep you
Airbnb may respond with a retention offer, a discount, a free month, or a downgrade to a cheaper tier. Don't engage with the counteroffer. Restate that you want a full cancellation and cite the consumer law again if they push back.
They’ll say: “Host offers to 'reschedule' instead of cancelling, or asks you to cancel on their behalf”
You say: Reply in writing: 'Per Airbnb policy a host must cancel a reservation they can't honour. Please cancel from your side so I receive a full refund.' Do not hit cancel yourself, that forfeits your refund.
They’ll say: “First-line support closes the case or sends boilerplate 'host's policy applies' replies”
You say: Reply on the existing case thread with photos/video, the listing description, and a one-line ask: 'Please escalate to the Rebooking and Refund Policy team, this is a Covered Issue under AirCover.' Keep everything in writing so the case manager can't claim you didn't document it.
They’ll say: “Case manager 'Catherine/Emma' goes silent for weeks”
You say: Post a concise public reply tagging @AirbnbHelp on X with your case number, Airbnb's social team escalates faster than the queue. If still stuck, ask in writing for the case to go to Executive Escalations and mention you'll file with your card issuer or, in the UK/EU, the relevant ADR scheme.
They’ll say: “Offer of Airbnb travel credit instead of a cash refund”
You say: Decline in writing and request the refund to the original payment method, terms confirm that if booking credit isn't used within 72 hours it auto-converts to a cash refund anyway.
Your rights when cancelling
The law where you live is the strongest hook, lead with it when you contact the company.
Worldwide
- Card-issuer chargebackYour bank can reverse the charge.
Visa, Mastercard, and Amex all run chargeback schemes, “goods/services not as described” or “subscription not cancelled” are valid reason codes everywhere they operate. Your bank handles the dispute; Airbnb has ~45 days to defend.
Rights in other regions (United Kingdom, European Union)
United Kingdom
- Consumer Contracts Regulations 201314-day cooling-off on new subscriptions.
You can terminate any continuous service contract within 14 days of starting it and recover any payment, no questions asked. Applies regardless of Airbnb’s own policy.
- Consumer Rights Act 2015Services must be as described.
If Airbnb’s service was misrepresented or didn’t deliver what was promised, you have a statutory right to remedy (repair, refund, or price reduction) regardless of their terms.
European Union
- Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU14-day right of withdrawal across all EU states.
EU-wide statutory right to withdraw from any distance-sold contract within 14 days. Mirrored into local law in every member state. Airbnb must honour it regardless of where they’re headquartered.
Delete your Airbnb account (not just cancel)
Cancelling stops the billing; deleting removes your account and personal data. Do them in that order, deleting an account with an active subscription can leave the billing running with no way to log in and stop it.
If there’s no delete option in Airbnb’s account settings, email support@airbnb.com with the subject Account deletion request, [your account email] and ask for your account and personal data to be erased under state privacy laws such as the CCPA. They’re typically required to act on it, most companies complete erasure within about 30 days, and you should ask for written confirmation when it’s done.
Common questions about cancelling Airbnb
On desktop: click **Trips**, pick the reservation, then under **Reservation details** click **Cancel reservation**, choose a reason, and confirm. You'll see the refund amount before you commit. The same flow exists in the mobile app under Trips. If you're eligible for a refund it goes back to your original payment method within 10 business days.
Money-back questions (windows, pro-rata, chargebacks) are covered in the Airbnb refund guide. Need a human for something else entirely? The Airbnb contact guide lists every channel that actually answers.
