The fastest way
Cancel a Western Union transfer before your receiver collects it: call Customer Care on 1-800-325-6000 (UK: 0800 833 833) or open Transfer History in your profile and use Cancel Transfer. US senders get an unconditional 30-minute window. Refunds post in roughly 3 to 10 business days; there is no consumer cancellation email.
Or let yoink do it for you.

- Phone (fastest): Call +1-800-325-6000 and say “cancel my service”. Expect a retention pitch, decline it twice and hold firm.
- Post: Cash sent in person is normally refunded only at the originating agent location, with photo ID and the MTCN. Written complaints go to Western Union Financial Services, Inc., Attn: Executive Resolutions Department, P.O. Box 6036, Englewood, CO 80155; UK correspondence goes to Western Union Payment Services GB Limited, Manning House, 3rd Floor, 22 Carlisle Place, London, SW1P 1JA.. Send it tracked so you can prove delivery.
- Email: Western Union doesn’t process cancellations by email. Still worth sending one: it dates your cancellation request in writing, which matters for disputes and refunds.
Timing matters: US senders have an unconditional 30-minute window after paying to cancel a remittance and get all funds and fees back. After that, cancellation is possible only until the receiver picks up the cash or the bank/wallet deposit completes, cash pickups can be collected within minutes. Unclaimed funds stay available for about 90 days but are never refunded automatically.
Cancelling a Western Union order by email
Western Union won’t action a cancellation from an email alone, use the fastest channel above for the cancellation itself. This email still earns its place: it puts your cancellation date in writing (your evidence if they keep billing) and it’s where the refund request happens.

What happens to what you’ve already paid
Money-transfer refunds are the whole policy here, Western Union sells one-off transfers, not a subscription, so there is nothing to 'cancel' on a recurring basis. For a remittance transfer, US senders have a statutory 30-minute right to cancel after paying and get everything back including fees; after that you can still cancel and be refunded as long as the receiver has not picked up the cash or the bank/wallet deposit has not completed. Western Union says a cancelled transfer is refunded within three business days of the request, while its own FAQ warns refunds typically take up to 10 business days to land, and how much comes back (principal only, or principal plus fee) depends on the service used and the reason for cancelling. Separate rules apply to money orders (refund claim with or without the receipt, processed by the money-order team) and to fraud claims, which go through the fraud hotline rather than the cancellation route and are only refunded if the money was not yet paid out.
“We will refund your money within three business days of your request to cancel a transfer as long as the funds have not already been picked up or deposited into a recipient's account.”

Does Western Union charge a cancellation fee?
We found no cancellation fee in Western Union’s published terms. On a rolling plan you simply pay to the end of the current billing period and nothing after. If you’re inside a fixed minimum term, check your signup email for the end date, cancelling early is where fees usually hide.
What doesn’t work for cancelling Western Union
Based on 7 sources, Reddit, app reviews, and direct testing. Skip these and save yourself the loop.
- ✕ Emailing a general Western Union support inbox to cancel a transfer, Western Union's US and UK contact pages route consumers to phone, chat, mail and web forms, no consumer cancellation mailbox is published, so cancellation requests by email are not a supported channel.
- ✕ Cancelling after the receiver has collected the cash or the deposit has completed, Western Union's own FAQ states a transfer can only be cancelled if it has not been picked up, or, for bank payouts, not completed by the receiver's bank.
- ✕ Cancelling online when you sent as a guest without a profile, The self-service Cancel Transfer link only appears inside a registered profile and only when the transfer is still eligible; guest senders are pushed to Customer Care with the MTCN.
- ✕ Asking your bank for a chargeback on a completed cash pickup, Consumers repeatedly report banks refusing to dispute a paid-out money transfer and referring them back to Western Union.
- ✕ Assuming the transfer fee comes back automatically, Western Union states the amount refunded (amount sent and/or transfer fees) depends on the service chosen and the reason for cancellation.
- ✕ Waiting for an unclaimed transfer to auto-refund, Funds stay available for pickup for around 90 days and are not returned automatically, the sender has to request cancellation, or the transfer is renewed on a call.
Cancelled Western Union but still being charged?
Three common reasons, in order of likelihood:
- The cancellation didn’t actually complete. If you never received a written confirmation from Western Union, treat it as not cancelled. Email
wucare@westernunion.comreferencing your original request date and ask for written confirmation plus a refund of any charge taken since. - You cancelled in the wrong place. Subscriptions started through the App Store or Google Play bill through Apple or Google, cancelling on Western Union’s site doesn’t touch them. Check Settings → Subscriptions on iPhone, or Play Store → Payments & subscriptions on Android.
- Billing lag. A charge that was already in flight when you cancelled can still land a few days later. One trailing charge can be normal; two is not.
If they keep charging after a confirmed cancellation, that’s chargeback territory: dispute the charge with your bank citing “subscription cancelled, merchant continued billing”. The yoink app also flags this automatically, it keeps watching your inbox after a confirmed cancellation and alerts you if Western Union charges again.
How Western Union will try to keep you
Western Union may respond with a retention offer, a discount, a free month, or a downgrade to a cheaper tier. Don't engage with the counteroffer. Restate that you want a full cancellation and cite the consumer law again if they push back.
They’ll say: “Agents offer to renew or re-send an unclaimed transfer instead of refunding it, Western Union holds funds ~90 days and tells callers the transfer can be renewed.”
You say: State plainly: 'I am not renewing this transfer. I am exercising my right to cancel MTCN ######### and I require the principal and the transfer fee returned to the original payment method. Please confirm the cancellation reference in writing.'
They’ll say: “Repeated identity-document requests that stall the refund for weeks (reported in published complaints where WU asked for ID copies and personal details before releasing a cancelled transfer's funds).”
You say: Send every document once, in one email/upload, and add: 'This is the complete set of verification documents, sent on [date]. Please confirm the refund release date within 5 business days; further duplicate requests will be treated as an unreasonable delay in my complaint.'
They’ll say: “The 'still processing' loop, status shows refunded online while the money hasn't reached the card or bank, past the quoted window.”
You say: 'Your disclosure states refunds are made within three business days of a cancellation request, and your FAQ quotes up to 10 business days. It is now day [X]. Please provide the refund trace/ARN so my card issuer can locate it.'
They’ll say: “Fraud claims are diverted to law enforcement, with consumers told a court order is needed before money moves.”
You say: 'I am not asking you to recover funds from the recipient. I am asking you to confirm in writing whether MTCN ######### was paid out. If it was not paid out, your published policy is a full refund of the transfer.'
They’ll say: “First-line phone agents close the case without escalation; Western Union runs a separate Executive Resolutions team (Attn: Executive Resolutions Department, P.O. Box 6036, Englewood, Colorado 80155) that handles unresolved cases.”
You say: 'Please log this as a formal complaint and pass it to the Executive Resolutions Department. Send me the complaint reference number today. If it is unresolved, I will escalate to the relevant financial regulator in my jurisdiction.'
Your rights when cancelling
The law where you live is the strongest hook, lead with it when you contact the company.
Worldwide
- Card-issuer chargebackYour bank can reverse the charge.
Visa, Mastercard, and Amex all run chargeback schemes, “goods/services not as described” or “subscription not cancelled” are valid reason codes everywhere they operate. Your bank handles the dispute; Western Union has ~45 days to defend.
Rights in other regions (United Kingdom, European Union)
United Kingdom
- Consumer Contracts Regulations 201314-day cooling-off on new subscriptions.
You can terminate any continuous service contract within 14 days of starting it and recover any payment, no questions asked. Applies regardless of Western Union’s own policy.
- Consumer Rights Act 2015Services must be as described.
If Western Union’s service was misrepresented or didn’t deliver what was promised, you have a statutory right to remedy (repair, refund, or price reduction) regardless of their terms.
European Union
- Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU14-day right of withdrawal across all EU states.
EU-wide statutory right to withdraw from any distance-sold contract within 14 days. Mirrored into local law in every member state. Western Union must honour it regardless of where they’re headquartered.
Delete your Western Union account (not just cancel)
Cancelling stops the billing; deleting removes your account and personal data. Do them in that order, deleting an account with an active subscription can leave the billing running with no way to log in and stop it.
If there’s no delete option in Western Union’s account settings, email wucare@westernunion.com with the subject Account deletion request, [your account email] and ask for your account and personal data to be erased under state privacy laws such as the CCPA. They’re typically required to act on it, most companies complete erasure within about 30 days, and you should ask for written confirmation when it’s done.
Common questions about cancelling Western Union
Yes, in most cases, as long as the recipient hasn't collected it. If you sent from the US, remittance rules give you an **unconditional 30-minute window** after payment to cancel for any reason and get back everything you paid, fees included. After 30 minutes it becomes conditional: cancellation works right up until pickup or deposit completion, then it stops being possible through normal channels. Speed is everything, cash pickups can be collected within minutes of you hitting send, so call rather than email, and have the MTCN ready before you dial.
Money-back questions (windows, pro-rata, chargebacks) are covered in the Western Union refund guide. Need a human for something else entirely? The Western Union contact guide lists every channel that actually answers.
