Cancellation Request, [your account email]Send this template
Hi GitHub team, I'm writing to cancel the subscription on my account, [your account email]. Please treat this as formal notice of cancellation, effective from the end of the current billing period. Under the FTC's Click-to-Cancel rule, cancellation must be available through a channel as simple as the one I signed up through. Please confirm by reply that the subscription has been cancelled and that no further charges will be taken. Best, [your name]
Wait for confirmation
Wait 24 hours. If there's no response, send a polite one-line follow-up referencing the original request.

GitHub’s refund policy
GitHub's default position is that cancellation stops future billing but does not refund the remainder of the current cycle, you keep access until the period you've already paid for ends. Exceptions exist: if your Copilot personal plan is replaced by a Business/Enterprise seat you get a prorated refund automatically, and during the April, May 2026 Copilot plan changes GitHub offered a Cancel-and-refund button in Billing settings. For one-off refunds (unused months, billing errors, accidental renewals) open a ticket at support.github.com/contact under Billing & Payments; consumer-law refunds (UK/EU 14-day right of withdrawal) apply if you have not used the service.
“No refunds are issued for unused time in the current cycle.”

Does GitHub charge a cancellation fee?
We found no cancellation fee in GitHub’s published terms. On a rolling plan you simply pay to the end of the current billing period and nothing after. If you’re inside a fixed minimum term, check your signup email for the end date, cancelling early is where fees usually hide.
What doesn’t work for cancelling GitHub
Based on 7 sources, Reddit, app reviews, and direct testing. Skip these and save yourself the loop.
- ✕ Calling GitHub on the phone, Terms state GitHub does not provide phone support; only enterprise Premium customers get callback support.
- ✕ Cancelling via an iOS or Android app store, Copilot subscriptions are managed only through the GitHub website, not mobile app stores.
- ✕ Just removing your payment method, GitHub blocks payment-method removal while you have an active trial or outstanding balance; the subscription must be cancelled first.
- ✕ Emailing support@github.com for Copilot cancellation, GitHub routes billing requests through the support ticket portal; a generic email is usually answered with a link to support.github.com/contact.
- ✕ Asking your bank to chargeback without cancelling first, Chargebacks can lock the GitHub account and you'll still need to cancel inside Settings to stop the next renewal.
Cancelled GitHub but still being charged?
Three common reasons, in order of likelihood:
- The cancellation didn’t actually complete. If you never received a written confirmation from GitHub, treat it as not cancelled. Email
support@github.comreferencing your original request date and ask for written confirmation plus a refund of any charge taken since. - You cancelled in the wrong place. Subscriptions started through the App Store or Google Play bill through Apple or Google, cancelling on GitHub’s site doesn’t touch them. Check Settings → Subscriptions on iPhone, or Play Store → Payments & subscriptions on Android.
- Billing lag. A charge that was already in flight when you cancelled can still land a few days later. One trailing charge can be normal; two is not.
If they keep charging after a confirmed cancellation, that’s chargeback territory: dispute the charge with your bank citing “subscription cancelled, merchant continued billing”. The yoink app also flags this automatically, it keeps watching your inbox after a confirmed cancellation and alerts you if GitHub charges again.
How GitHub will try to keep you
GitHub may respond with a retention offer, a discount, a free month, or a downgrade to a cheaper tier. Don't engage with the counteroffer. Restate that you want a full cancellation and cite the consumer law again if they push back.
They’ll say: “GitHub offers to downgrade you to Copilot Free instead of cancelling outright.”
You say: Say: 'I want a full cancellation, not a downgrade. Please confirm in writing that auto-renewal is off and no further charges will be made.'
They’ll say: “Support replies that 'no refunds are issued for unused time in the current cycle' and points to the policy.”
You say: Reply citing usage logs: 'I have not used Copilot since [date], under UK Consumer Rights Act 2015 / EU Consumer Rights Directive Article 16 I retain the right of withdrawal as the digital service has not been substantially performed. Please issue a refund of the unused portion to my original payment method.'
They’ll say: “Tickets sit unanswered for weeks under Billing → Subscription (multiple Reddit/GitHub Community reports of >1 month silence).”
You say: Open a second ticket under Billing & Payments → Copilot → Cancellation, reference the original ticket number, and add 'No response in 30 days, escalating before initiating a card chargeback.' Tag @githubsupport on X as a parallel nudge.
They’ll say: “If you're a verified student/teacher/maintainer the Cancel button is hidden because you're on free access.”
You say: If you're being charged anyway your account has been switched off the free programme, open a Billing ticket and ask them to reinstate the free benefit and refund the charge.
They’ll say: “GitHub may say a refund is a 'one-time courtesy' and refuse next time.”
You say: Get the cancellation confirmation in writing the same day and set a calendar reminder 3 days before the next renewal so you never need a second courtesy.
Your rights when cancelling
The law where you live is the strongest hook, lead with it when you contact the company.
United States
- FTC Click-to-Cancel Rule (2024+)Cancel must be as easy as sign-up.
The Federal Trade Commission’s Click-to-Cancel rule requires GitHub to make cancelling at least as simple as signing up, same channel, same number of clicks. If they buried the cancel button or forced a phone call, they’re in violation; report to reportfraud.ftc.gov.
- California ARL (auto-renewal law)Renewal must be cancellable online.
California Business & Professions Code §17602 forces any company billing California residents on auto-renewal to provide an online cancel mechanism. Lawsuits have been won on this; companies often refund quickly when it’s cited.
Worldwide
- Card-issuer chargebackYour bank can reverse the charge.
Visa, Mastercard, and Amex all run chargeback schemes, “goods/services not as described” or “subscription not cancelled” are valid reason codes everywhere they operate. Your bank handles the dispute; GitHub has ~45 days to defend.
Rights in other regions (United Kingdom, European Union)
United Kingdom
- Consumer Contracts Regulations 201314-day cooling-off on new subscriptions.
You can terminate any continuous service contract within 14 days of starting it and recover any payment, no questions asked. Applies regardless of GitHub’s own policy.
- Consumer Rights Act 2015Services must be as described.
If GitHub’s service was misrepresented or didn’t deliver what was promised, you have a statutory right to remedy (repair, refund, or price reduction) regardless of their terms.
European Union
- Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU14-day right of withdrawal across all EU states.
EU-wide statutory right to withdraw from any distance-sold contract within 14 days. Mirrored into local law in every member state. GitHub must honour it regardless of where they’re headquartered.
Delete your GitHub account (not just cancel)
Cancelling stops the billing; deleting removes your account and personal data. Do them in that order, deleting an account with an active subscription can leave the billing running with no way to log in and stop it.
If there’s no delete option in GitHub’s account settings, email support@github.com with the subject Account deletion request, [your account email] and ask for your account and personal data to be erased under state privacy laws such as the CCPA. They’re typically required to act on it, most companies complete erasure within about 30 days, and you should ask for written confirmation when it’s done.
Common questions about cancelling GitHub
Open **Settings → Billing & licensing**, find the trialing product (Copilot, Enterprise, or a Marketplace app), click **Manage subscription** and choose **Cancel**. Cancelling a free trial **prevents future charges but does not refund payments already processed**. For a GitHub Marketplace app trial, cancelling ends access immediately rather than at the end of the cycle. Do this at least 24 hours before the trial ends, auto-renew runs the moment the trial expires.
Money-back questions (windows, pro-rata, chargebacks) are covered in the GitHub refund guide. Need a human for something else entirely? The GitHub contact guide lists every channel that actually answers.
