The fastest way
H&M is a retailer, not a subscription — you cancel orders or close your free H&M Member account. To cancel an unshipped order, email customerservice.uk@hm.com (UK) or use the Contact Us form fast; subject: 'Cancel order [#] — pre-dispatch'. Card refunds typically land within 14 days of warehouse receipt.

Cancellation Request — [your account email]Send this template
Hi H&M team, I'm writing to request the immediate cancellation of my subscription tied to this account, effective today. Under applicable consumer-protection law (UK Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, EU Directive 2011/83/EU, or the FTC's Click-to-Cancel rule depending on your jurisdiction), I'm entitled to terminate this continuous service contract through the same channel it was formed in — please confirm by reply that no further charges will be made. If your policy permits, I'd also appreciate a pro-rata refund for any unused portion of the current billing period. Best, [your name]

H&M plans you can cancel

Cancel via My Account → Privacy Portal, or by contacting Customer Service. After cancelling you can only use guest checkout online.

H&M’s refund policy
H&M gives you 30 days from receipt to return most items for a refund to your original payment method. Card refunds are issued within 14 days of the warehouse receiving and inspecting your return; gift-card payments are refunded to an e-gift card. Mail returns from non-Members have a small shipping fee deducted. Designer collabs (e.g. Glen Martens, Mugler, Rabanne) get only a 7-day window, and Final Sale, opened cosmetics, pierced jewellery, underwear and unsealed swimwear are non-returnable.
“You may cancel or return your order from the date you place the order until 30 days after purchase. … We will provide a refund attempting to use the same method used to make the payment … as soon as possible and at the latest within 14 days of receiving your notice of cancellation”

What doesn’t work for cancelling H&M
Based on 3 sources — Reddit, app reviews, and direct testing. Skip these and save yourself the loop.
- ✕ Cancelling an order after it has been dispatched from the warehouse — H&M terms only allow pre-shipment cancellation; after dispatch you must accept delivery and return for refund.
- ✕ Returning Final Sale, opened cosmetics, pierced earrings, face masks, hosiery, underwear or unsealed swimwear — Explicitly excluded for hygiene/clearance reasons — refused with or without receipt.
- ✕ Returning a designer collab item after 7 days — Designer collaborations (e.g. Glen Martens x H&M, Mugler, Rabanne, Perfect Moment) have a shortened 3–7 day return window, not 30.
- ✕ Demanding a cash refund on a gift-card purchase — Items paid for with an H&M gift card are refunded back to a new e-gift card, not to cash or card.
- ✕ Returning H&M HOME items in-store — Online H&M HOME items must be returned by mail and cannot be returned in physical stores.
- ✕ Phoning to cancel a same-day next-day-delivery order — Trustpilot reviewers report calling within 30 minutes of placing an order and still being told the order could not be cancelled or shipping method changed.
- ✕ Mailing back without the prepaid label / pre-printed return form — Missing the original receipt, order confirmation or return form past the 30-day deadline causes H&M to refuse the return.
How H&M will try to keep you
H&M may respond with a retention offer — a discount, a free month, or a downgrade to a cheaper tier. Don't engage with the counteroffer. Restate that you want a full cancellation and cite the consumer law again if they push back.
They’ll say: “Refund refused / forced gift-card credit instead of card refund”
You say: Trustpilot users report being issued an H&M gift card for returns over £150 without consent. Insist in writing that the terms require refund 'attempting to use the same method used to make the payment' and cite UK Consumer Rights Act / EU Consumer Rights Directive for a cash-equivalent refund to the original card.
They’ll say: “'Damage assessment' delay used to stall refunds”
You say: Reviewers describe 2–3 week holds while H&M 'investigates' carrier damage. Push back that under the Consumer Rights Act / UCC, risk sits with the seller until you receive the goods — request the refund within 14 days as stated in their own terms, not after their internal investigation.
They’ll say: “Chatbot loop with no continuity between email agents”
You say: Trustpilot complaints note each email reply comes from a different rep using cut-and-paste copy. Quote your original ticket reference in every reply and demand a named case owner before escalating to executive customer relations.
They’ll say: “20% goodwill discount offered instead of fixing the missing item”
You say: When items are missing from a parcel, support has offered 20% off a re-order rather than refunding the missing items. Refuse — under distance-selling rules you're owed the value of the goods not delivered, full stop.
They’ll say: “Sale-price mismatch on the receipt”
You say: BBB complaints flag in-store sale tickets that ring up at full price; calls get disconnected. Photograph the shelf tag, escalate via the Contact Us form attaching the photo, and cite local price-accuracy laws (NY GBL §349 / UK CPRs 2008).
Your rights when cancelling
Consumer law varies by where you live. The strongest hook for your country is the one to lead with when you contact the company — pick the one that applies and quote it in your email.
United States
- FTC Click-to-Cancel Rule (2024+)Cancel must be as easy as sign-up.
The Federal Trade Commission’s Click-to-Cancel rule requires H&M to make cancelling at least as simple as signing up — same channel, same number of clicks. If they buried the cancel button or forced a phone call, they’re in violation; report to reportfraud.ftc.gov.
- California ARL (auto-renewal law)Renewal must be cancellable online.
California Business & Professions Code §17602 forces any company billing California residents on auto-renewal to provide an online cancel mechanism. Lawsuits have been won on this; companies often refund quickly when it’s cited.
- Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act (ROSCA)Negative-option billing must be clearly disclosed.
Federal law (15 U.S.C. §8401) requires H&M to clearly disclose any negative-option / auto-renewal terms before charging. Buried terms = potential federal violation. Report to the FTC alongside any FTC complaint.
United Kingdom
- Consumer Contracts Regulations 201314-day cooling-off on new subscriptions.
You can terminate any continuous service contract within 14 days of starting it and recover any payment, no questions asked. Applies regardless of H&M’s own policy.
- Consumer Rights Act 2015Services must be as described.
If H&M’s service was misrepresented or didn’t deliver what was promised, you have a statutory right to remedy (repair, refund, or price reduction) regardless of their terms.
European Union
- Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU14-day right of withdrawal across all EU states.
EU-wide statutory right to withdraw from any distance-sold contract within 14 days. Mirrored into local law in every member state. H&M must honour it regardless of where they’re headquartered.
- Digital Content Directive (EU) 2019/770Refund rights for digital content failures.
Specific to digital subscriptions — gives you the right to a price reduction or contract termination when H&M’s digital service is not as advertised, with no time limit beyond the contract period.
Worldwide
- Card-issuer chargebackYour bank can reverse the charge.
Visa, Mastercard, and Amex all run chargeback schemes — “goods/services not as described” or “subscription not cancelled” are valid reason codes everywhere they operate. Your bank handles the dispute; H&M has ~45 days to defend.
Common questions about cancelling H&M
Speed is everything — H&M only lets you cancel **before the order leaves the warehouse**. Sign in to **My Account → Not Yet Shipped Items**, set the quantity to 0 and click Apply. If that option isn't there, email **customerservice.uk@hm.com** (UK) or use the in-app AI assistant and ask immediately for cancellation, quoting your order number. Once it shows as dispatched, you can't stop it — you'll need to refuse delivery or use the 30-day return window instead.
