Rocket Money review: what it does well — and where it stops.

Rocket Money is the default answer to "there's an app that finds your subscriptions." It deserves most of that reputation. This review covers what the free tier really includes, what Premium costs, whether the cancellation button does what it implies, how the bill-negotiation fee works — and the category of problem it was never built to touch.

who's writing this: we make yoink, an app that competes with Rocket Money. So this page names the things Rocket Money does better than us, and there are several. Facts checked August 2026.

what is Rocket Money?

Rocket Money started life as Truebill, was acquired by Rocket Companies (the Rocket Mortgage group) in 2021, and renamed in 2022. Today it's a full personal-finance app for iOS, Android and web: link your bank accounts and cards, and it builds a live picture of your recurring charges, spending, credit score and net worth. The headline feature — the one the ads run on — is subscription management: see everything you're paying for, and have unwanted ones cancelled.

That framing matters for the rest of this review: Rocket Money is a bank-linked tracker with services attached. Everything it does flows from watching your transactions. What it doesn't do — and can't, structurally — is argue with a merchant about money that already left your account.

where Rocket Money genuinely wins

subscription visibility

the core promise works: link your accounts and every recurring charge surfaces, including ones you'd forgotten. this alone is worth the download.

budgeting suite

categories, spending insights, credit score, net worth — a genuinely complete personal-finance app, not a single-trick tool.

cancellation concierge

on Premium, "cancel this for me" really does hand many cancellations to their team. for some merchants you get instructions instead, but the concierge is real.

pedigree

owned by Rocket Companies (Rocket Mortgage). this is not a fly-by-night app; support, security posture and longevity are what you'd expect.

how much does Rocket Money cost?

Three numbers to know, all as of August 2026 and all confirmed against Rocket Money's own pages (sources at the bottom):

Rocket Money free vs Premium

The shortest honest summary: free shows you the problem, Premium acts on it.

does Rocket Money actually cancel subscriptions?

This is the question people actually search, so precisely: on Premium, you tap the subscription → Cancel → "Cancel This For Me", and for many merchants their team handles it from there. For other merchants the app shows you instructions to do it yourself instead — cancellation coverage depends on the merchant, and their own help pages are upfront that some cancellations can't be done on your behalf. On the free tier you get the list and the instructions, not the concierge.

Two structural limits worth knowing before you rely on it. First, it cancels forward — the goal is that next month's charge doesn't happen. If last month's renewal already hit and you want it back, that's a refund fight, not a cancellation. Second, when a merchant resists — "you're in a 12-month term", "no refunds", silence — the interaction ends with the attempt. There's no mechanism that argues.

the bill-negotiation fee, with real numbers

Rocket Money's negotiators will call your internet, phone or insurance provider and haggle. When it works it's real money — but read the fee before opting in: you pay a percentage of your first year's savings, at a rate you pick inside their allowed range. Concretely: if they knock $20/mo off your internet bill, that's $240 saved in year one — and at typical rates a meaningful slice of that goes to the fee, on top of your Premium subscription. Year two onward, the savings are all yours. It's a fair trade if you'd never have made the call; just don't mistake it for a free feature.

where it stops

Every bank-linked tracker shares one boundary: it manages the future, not the past. Three shapes of problem fall outside Rocket Money's model entirely:

money already taken

an unwanted renewal that already charged, a duplicate charge, an order that never arrived — Rocket Money manages what happens NEXT month, not what happened last week.

merchants who say no

when a cancellation or refund needs arguing — policy pushback, lowball offers, ignored emails — a tracker has no move. nobody writes back on your behalf, cites your consumer rights, or follows up on the silence.

one-off purchases

it's subscription-shaped. refunds on physical orders, digital purchases and travel disruption are out of scope entirely.

what "fighting" means in practice

A real yoink case from this summer: a £120 order refund Amazon refused twice. The agent kept the thread alive for two months — follow-ups when they stalled, a rotation to a working address when one bounced, consumer-law citations when they pushed back, and a polite refusal when they cross-wired it with a different order. Amazon confirmed the full refund this week. No tracker does that; that's the category difference this page is really about.

so — is Rocket Money worth it?

worth it if
  • · you want one app for budgets, credit score and net worth
  • · you'd pay ~$100/yr to have subscriptions visible and cancellable in one place
  • · you have negotiable bills and would never make the call yourself
  • · you're on Android or want a web app
skip it if
  • · the money you're upset about has already been charged
  • · your problem merchants are the kind that say no twice
  • · you want cancellation without a ~$7–14/mo subscription
  • · you don't want another app watching your bank account

the two apps, side by side

Since we're the competitor writing this: here's the whole comparison, including the rows we lose.

featureyoinkRocket Money
finds your subscriptions automatically
actually cancels for you±

Rocket Money's cancellation concierge is a Premium feature; some merchants get instructions rather than a done-for-you cancel. yoink's agent emails the merchant from your own address and handles the back-and-forth.

fights for refunds on past charges

unwanted renewals, duplicate charges, orders that never arrived — yoink writes the claim, cites the consumer law that applies, and keeps pushing after a "no".

keeps chasing after the first refusal
flight delay compensation

yoink watches your booked flights and files delay-compensation claims when rules apply.

budgeting, spend tracking & net worth

this is Rocket Money's home turf — full budgeting suite, credit score, net-worth tracking. yoink doesn't do any of it.

bill negotiation±

Rocket Money negotiates bills but takes a success fee — a percentage of your first year's savings.

Android + web app

yoink is iOS-only today.

price±

yoink is free and keeps none of your refunds. Rocket Money's free tier lists subscriptions; cancellation and most headline features need Premium (roughly $7–14/mo, you pick — as of August 2026).

Rocket Money — the questions people actually ask

Is Rocket Money legit?

Yes. Rocket Money (formerly Truebill) is owned by Rocket Companies, the group behind Rocket Mortgage, and is used by millions of people. The question isn't legitimacy — it's whether what you need is tracking (its strength) or getting money back (where it stops).

How much does Rocket Money cost?

The free tier shows your subscriptions and basic budgeting. Premium is a pick-your-price subscription — roughly $7–14 a month as of August 2026 — and unlocks the cancellation concierge, full budgeting and the rest of the headline features. Bill negotiation additionally takes a percentage of your first year's savings as a success fee.

Does Rocket Money actually cancel subscriptions for you?

On Premium, yes, for many merchants — you tap "cancel this for me" and their team handles it. For some merchants you get instructions to do it yourself instead. On the free tier you get the list, not the cancellation.

Will Rocket Money get me a refund on a charge I already paid?

That isn't what it's built for. Rocket Money manages what you're subscribed to going forward. If the money already left — an unwanted renewal, a double charge, an order that never showed — you need something that argues with the merchant. That's the gap yoink exists to fill: its agent emails the company from your own address, cites the consumer protection that applies, and keeps chasing until it's resolved.

Is Rocket Money worth it?

If you want one app for budgeting, credit score, net worth and subscription visibility, it's one of the best all-rounders and Premium can pay for itself. If your specific problem is unwanted charges and refunds nobody answers, a tracker — however good — watches the leak rather than plugging it.
